Balak Hebrew Parsha – 1st Aliyah

Balak (בָּלָק)

Numbers 22:2 – 25:9

First Aliyah

22:2
When Balak son of Tzippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,
Vayar Balak ben-Tsipor et kol-asher-asah Yisra’el la-Emori.

22:3
the Moabites became deathly afraid because the [Israelite] people were so numerous. Dreading the Israelites,

22:4
Moab said to the elders of Midian, ‘Now the [Israelite] community will lick up everything around us, just as a bull licks up all the vegetation in the field.’ Balak son of Tzippor was then king of Moab.
Vayomer Moav el-zikney Midyan atah yelachachu hakahal et-kol-svivoteynu kilechoch hashor et yerek hasadeh uValak ben-Tsipor melech le-Moav ba’et hahi.

22:5
He sent emissaries to Balaam son of Beor, to his native land in Pethor on the [Euphrates] River. They were to summon him with the following message: ‘A nation that covers the land’s surface has left Egypt, and is now staying right near us.
Vayishlach mal’achim el-Bil’am ben-Be’or Petorah asher al-hanahar erets beney-amo likro-lo lemor hineh am yatsa miMitsrayim hineh chisah et-eyn ha’arets vehu yoshev mimuli.

22:6
This nation is too powerful for us [alone], so if you would, come and curse this nation for me. Then, we may be able to defeat them and drive them from the area. I know that whomever you bless is blessed, and whomever you curse is cursed.’
Ve’atah lecha-na arah-li et-ha’am hazeh ki-atsum hu mimeni ulay uchal nakeh-bo va’agarshenu min-ha’arets ki yadati et asher-tevarech mevorach va’asher ta’or yu’ar.

22:7
The elders of Moab and Midian, versed in occult arts, went to Balaam, conveying to him Balak’s message.
Vayelechu zikney Moav vezikney Midyan uksamim beyadam vayavo’u el-Bil’am vayedaberu elav divrey Valak.

22:8
‘Spend the night here,’ he replied to them, ‘and when God speaks to me, I will be able to give you an answer.’ The Moabite dignitaries remained with Balaam.
Vayomer aleyhem linu foh halaylah vahashivoti etchem davar ka’asher yedaber Adonay elay vayeshvu sarey-Moav im-Bil’am.

22:9
God appeared to Balaam and asked, ‘Who are these men with you?’
Vayavo Elohim el-Bil’am vayomer mi ha’anashim ha’eleh imach.

22:10
Balaam replied to God, ‘Balak son of Tzippor, king of Moab, has sent me a message:
Vayomer Bil’am el-ha’Elohim Balak ben-Tsipor melech Moav shalach elay.

22:11
‘A nation that covers the earth’s surface has left Egypt. Come and curse them for me, so that, hopefully, I will be able to fight against them and drive them away.’ ‘
Hineh ha’am hayotse miMitsrayim vayechas et-eyn ha’arets atah lechah kavah-li oto ulay uchal lehilachem bo vegerashtiv.

22:12
God said to Balaam, ‘Do not go with them. Do not curse the nation [in question], because it is a blessed [nation].’
