Balak (בָּלָק)

Numbers 22:2 – 25:9

Sixth Aliyah

23:27
‘If you would, let’s go on,’ said Balak to Balaam. ‘I will take you somewhere else. Hopefully, God will consider it proper to let you curse them for me there.’
Vayomer Balak el-Bil’am lechah-na ekachacha el-makom acher ulay yishar be’eyney ha’Elohim vekaboto li misham.

23:28
Balak took Balaam to the top of the peak that overlooks the Wasteland.
Vayikach Balak et-Bil’am rosh hape’or hanishkaf al-peney hayeshimon.

23:29
Balaam said to Balak, ‘Build me seven altars here, and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.’
Vayomer Bil’am el-Balak bneh-li vazeh shiv’ah mizbechot vehachen li bazeh shiv’ah farim veshiv’ah eylim.

23:30
Balak did as Balaam said, and he sacrificed a bull and ram as a burnt offering on each altar.
Vaya’as Balak ka’asher amar Bil’am vaya’al par va’ayil bamizbe’ach.

24:1
When Balaam realized that God desired to bless Israel, he did not seek out the occult forces as he had done before. Instead, he set his gaze toward the desert.
Vayar Bil’am ki tov be’eyney Adonay levarech et-Yisra’el velo-halach kefa’am-befa’am likrat nechashim vayashet el-hamidbar panav.

24:2
When Balaam raised his eyes, and saw Israel dwelling at peace by tribes, God’s spirit was on him.
Vayisa Vil’am et-eynav vayar et-Yisra’el shochen lishvatav vatehi alav ruach Elohim.

24:3
He proclaimed his oracle and said, ‘This is the word of Beor’s son Balaam, the word of the man with the enlightened eye.
Vayisa meshalo vayomar neum Bil’am bno Ve’or uneum hagever shtum ha’ayin.

24:4
It is the word of one who hears God’s sayings, who sees a vision of the Almighty, falling [into a meditative trance] with mystical insight.
Neum shomea imrey-El asher machazeh shaday yechezeh nofel ugluy eynayim.

24:5
‘How good are your tents, Jacob, your tabernacles, Israel.
Mah-tovu ohaleycha Ya’akov mishkenoteycha Yisra’el.

24:6
[They] stretch out like streams, like gardens by the river; they are like the aloes God has planted, like cedars by the water.
Kinechalim nitayu keganot aley nahar ka’ahalim nata Adonay ka’arazim aley-mayim.

24:7
His dipper shall overflow, and his crops shall have abundant water. ‘When their kingdom is established, their king shall be greater than Agag.
Yizal-mayim midolyo vezar’o bemayim rabim veyarom me’agag malko vetinase malchuto.

24:8
Since God brought them out of Egypt, they are like His highest expression of strength. [God] shall devour His enemy nations, grinding their bones and piercing them with His arrows.

24:9
[Israel] crouches, lies like a lion, like an awesome lion, who will dare rouse him? Those who bless you are blessed, and those who curse you are cursed.’

24:10
Furious at Balaam, Balak struck his hand together. ‘I brought you to curse my enemies,’ said Balak to Balaam, ‘but you blessed them these three times!
Vayichar-af Balak el-Bil’am vayispok et-kapav vayomer Balak el-Bil’am lakov oyvay kraticha vehineh berachta varech zeh shalosh pe’amim.

24:11
Now go home as fast as you can! I promised to honor you, but God won’t let you get any honor!’
Ve’atah vrach-lecha el-mekomecha amarti kabed achabedcha vehineh mena’acha Adonay mikavod.

24:12
Balaam said to Balak, ‘My exact words to the messengers you sent me were,
Vayomer Bil’am el-Balak halo gam el-mal’acheycha asher-shalachta elay dibarti lemor.

24:13
‘Even if Balak gives me his whole palace full of gold and silver, I cannot do anything good or bad on my own that would violate God’s word.’ Isn’t that true? I must proclaim whatever God declares.
