Numbers 8:1 – 12:16

Fifth Aliyah



10:11
In the second year [of the Exodus], on the 20th of the second month, the cloud rose from the Tabernacle of Testimony.
Vayehi bashanah hashenit bachodesh hasheni be’esrim bachodesh na’alah he’anan me’al Mishkan ha’edut.
וַיְהִי בַּשָּׁנָה הַשֵּׁנִית, בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי–בְּעֶשְׂרִים בַּחֹדֶשׁ; נַעֲלָה, הֶעָנָן, מֵעַל, מִשְׁכַּן הָעֵדֻת.

10:12
The Israelites thus began their travels, [moving on] from the Sinai Desert [until] the cloud came to rest in the Paran Desert.
Vayis’u veney Yisra’el lemas’eyhem mimidbar Sinay vayishkon he’anan bemidbar Paran.
וַיִּסְעוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמַסְעֵיהֶם, מִמִּדְבַּר סִינָי; וַיִּשְׁכֹּן הֶעָנָן, בְּמִדְבַּר פָּארָן.

10:13
This was the first journey at God’s word through Moses.
Vayis’u barishonah al-pi Adonay beyad-Moshe.
וַיִּסְעוּ, בָּרִאשֹׁנָה, עַל-פִּי יְהוָה, בְּיַד-מֹשֶׁה.

10:14
The divisions in the banner camp of Judah’s descendants set out first. Heading that division was Nachshon son of Aminadav.
Vayisa degel machaneh vney-Yehudah barishonah letsiv’otam ve’al-tseva’o Nachshon ben-Aminadav.
וַיִּסַּע דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה בְנֵי-יְהוּדָה, בָּרִאשֹׁנָה–לְצִבְאֹתָם; וְעַל-צְבָאוֹ–נַחְשׁוֹן, בֶּן-עַמִּינָדָב.

10:15
Heading the tribal division of Issachar’s descendants was Nethanel son of Tzuar,
Ve’al-tseva mateh beney Yisachar Netan’el ben-Tsu’ar.
וְעַל-צְבָא–מַטֵּה, בְּנֵי יִשָּׂשכָר: נְתַנְאֵל, בֶּן-צוּעָר.

10:16
and heading the tribal division of Zebulun’s descendants was Eliav son of Chelon.
Ve’al-tseva mateh beney Zevulun Eli’av ben-Chelon.
וְעַל-צְבָא–מַטֵּה, בְּנֵי זְבוּלֻן: אֱלִיאָב, בֶּן-חֵלֹן.

10:17
The Tabernacle was then dismantled, and the descendants of Gershon and Merari, who carried the Tabernacle, began the march.
Vehurad haMishkan venas’u veney-Gershon uvney Merari nos’ey haMishkan.
וְהוּרַד, הַמִּשְׁכָּן; וְנָסְעוּ בְנֵי-גֵרְשׁוֹן וּבְנֵי מְרָרִי, נֹשְׂאֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן.

10:18
The divisions in the banner camp of Reuben then began to march. Heading that division was Elitzur son of Shedey-ur.
Venasa degel machaneh Re’uven letsiv’otam ve’al-tseva’o Elitsur ben-Shdey’ur.
וְנָסַע, דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה רְאוּבֵן–לְצִבְאֹתָם; וְעַל-צְבָאוֹ–אֱלִיצוּר, בֶּן-שְׁדֵיאוּר.

10:19
Heading the tribal division of Simeon’s descendants was Shelumiel son of Tzuri-Shaddai,
Ve’al-tseva mateh beney Shim’on Shlumi’el ben-Tsurishaday.
וְעַל-צְבָא–מַטֵּה, בְּנֵי שִׁמְעוֹן: שְׁלֻמִיאֵל, בֶּן-צוּרִישַׁדָּי.

10:20
and heading the tribal division of Gad’s descendants was Elyassaf son of Deuel.
Ve’al-tseva mateh veney-Gad Elyasaf ben-De’u’el.
וְעַל-צְבָא, מַטֵּה בְנֵי-גָד: אֶלְיָסָף, בֶּן-דְּעוּאֵל.

10:21
The Kehothites, who carried the sacred furniture, then began their march. The Tabernacle would be set before they arrived [at the destination].
Venas’u haKehatim nos’ey hamikdash vehekimu et-haMishkan ad-bo’am.
וְנָסְעוּ, הַקְּהָתִים, נֹשְׂאֵי, הַמִּקְדָּשׁ; וְהֵקִימוּ אֶת-הַמִּשְׁכָּן, עַד-בֹּאָם.

10:22
The divisions in the banner camp of Ephraim’s descendants then began the march. Heading their division was Elishama son of Amihud.
Venasa degel machaneh vney-Efrayim letsiv’otam ve’al-tseva’o Elishama ben-Amihud.
וְנָסַע, דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה בְנֵי-אֶפְרַיִם–לְצִבְאֹתָם; וְעַל-צְבָאוֹ–אֱלִישָׁמָע, בֶּן-עַמִּיהוּד.

10:23
Heading the tribal division of Manasseh’s descendants was Gamliel son of Padah-tzur,
Ve’al-tseva mateh beney Menasheh Gamli’el ben-Pedatsur.
וְעַל-צְבָא–מַטֵּה, בְּנֵי מְנַשֶּׁה: גַּמְלִיאֵל, בֶּן-פְּדָהצוּר.

10:24
and heading the tribal division of Benjamin’s descendants was Avidan son of Gid’oni.
Ve’al-tseva mateh bney Vinyamin Avidan ben-Gid’oni.
וְעַל-צְבָא–מַטֵּה, בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן: אֲבִידָן, בֶּן-גִּדְעוֹנִי.

10:25
Then the divisions in the banner camp of Dan’s descendants, the last of the camps, began the march. Heading their division was Achiezer son of Ami-shaddai.
Venasa degel machaneh vney-Dan me’asef lechol-hamachanot letsiv’otam ve’al-tseva’o Achi’ezer ben-Amishaday.
וְנָסַע, דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה בְנֵי-דָן–מְאַסֵּף לְכָל-הַמַּחֲנֹת, לְצִבְאֹתָם; וְעַל-צְבָאוֹ–אֲחִיעֶזֶר, בֶּן-עַמִּישַׁדָּי.

10:26
Heading the tribal division of Asher’s descendants was Pagiel son of Akhran,
Ve’al-tseva mateh bney Asher Pagi’el ben-Ochran.
וְעַל-צְבָא–מַטֵּה, בְּנֵי אָשֵׁר: פַּגְעִיאֵל, בֶּן-עָכְרָן.

10:27
and heading the tribal divisions of Naphtali’s descendants was Achira son of Eynan.
Ve’al-tseva mateh bney Naftali Achira ben-Eynan.
וְעַל-צְבָא–מַטֵּה, בְּנֵי נַפְתָּלִי: אֲחִירַע, בֶּן-עֵינָן.

10:28
When they set out, this was the marching order of the Israelites, according to their divisions.
Eleh mas’ey vney-Yisra’el letsiv’otam vayisa’u.
אֵלֶּה מַסְעֵי בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְצִבְאֹתָם; וַיִּסָּעוּ.

10:29
Moses said to his father-in-law, Chovev son of Reuel the Midianite, ‘We are now on our way to the place that God promised to give us. Come with us and we will let you share the benefit of all the good things that God has promised Israel.’
Vayomer Moshe le-Chovav ben-Re’u’el haMidyani choten Moshe nos’im anachnu el-hamakom asher amar Adonay oto eten lachem lechah itanu vehetavnu lach ki-Adonay diber-tov al-Yisra’el.
וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה, לְחֹבָב בֶּן-רְעוּאֵל הַמִּדְיָנִי חֹתֵן מֹשֶׁה, נֹסְעִים אֲנַחְנוּ אֶל-הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר אָמַר יְהוָה, אֹתוֹ אֶתֵּן לָכֶם; לְכָה אִתָּנוּ וְהֵטַבְנוּ לָךְ, כִּי-יְהוָה דִּבֶּר-טוֹב עַל-יִשְׂרָאֵל.

10:30
‘I would rather not go,’ replied [Chovev]. ‘I wish to return to my land and my birthplace.’
Vayomer elav lo elech ki im-el-artsi ve’el-moladeti elech.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו, לֹא אֵלֵךְ: כִּי אִם-אֶל-אַרְצִי וְאֶל-מוֹלַדְתִּי, אֵלֵךְ.

10:31
‘Do not abandon us,’ said [Moses]. ‘After all, you are familiar with the places where we are going to camp in the desert, and you can be our guide.
Vayomer al-na ta’azov otanu ki al-ken yadata chanotenu bamidbar vehayita lanu le’eynayim.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אַל-נָא תַּעֲזֹב אֹתָנוּ: כִּי עַל-כֵּן יָדַעְתָּ, חֲנֹתֵנוּ בַּמִּדְבָּר, וְהָיִיתָ לָּנוּ, לְעֵינָיִם.

10:32
If you go with us, we will share with you whatever good God grants us.’
Vehayah ki-telech imanu vehayah hatov hahu asher yetiv Adonay imanu vehetavnu lach.
וְהָיָה, כִּי-תֵלֵךְ עִמָּנוּ: וְהָיָה הַטּוֹב הַהוּא, אֲשֶׁר יֵיטִיב יְהוָה עִמָּנוּ–וְהֵטַבְנוּ לָךְ.

10:33
[The Israelites] marched [the distance of] a three day journey from God’s mountain. The Ark of God’s covenant traveled three days ahead of them in order to find them a place to settle.
Vayis’u mehar Adonay derech shloshet yamim va’aron brit-Adonay nosea lifneyhem derech shloshet yamim latur lahem menuchah.
וַיִּסְעוּ מֵהַר יְהוָה, דֶּרֶךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים; וַאֲרוֹן בְּרִית-יְהוָה נֹסֵעַ לִפְנֵיהֶם, דֶּרֶךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים, לָתוּר לָהֶם, מְנוּחָה.

10:34
When they began traveling from the camp by day, God’s cloud remained over them.
Va’anan Adonay aleyhem yomam benose’am min-hamachaneh.
וַעֲנַן יְהוָה עֲלֵיהֶם, יוֹמָם, בְּנָסְעָם, מִן-הַמַּחֲנֶה.
