20:22
Moving on from Kadesh, the entire Israelite community came to Hor Mountain.
Vayis’u miKadesh vayavo’u veney-Yisra’el kol-ha’edah Hor hahar.
וַיִּסְעוּ, מִקָּדֵשׁ; וַיָּבֹאוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל כָּל-הָעֵדָה, הֹר הָהָר.

20:23
At Hor Mountain, God said to Moses and Aaron,
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe ve’el-Aharon beHor hahar al-gvul erets Edom lemor.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-מֹשֶׁה וְאֶל-אַהֲרֹן, בְּהֹר הָהָר, עַל-גְּבוּל אֶרֶץ-אֱדוֹם, לֵאמֹר.

20:24
‘Aaron will [now die and] be gathered up to his people. He will not come to the land that I am giving the Israelites because you rebelled against My word at the Waters of Dispute.
Ye’asef Aharon el-amav ki lo yavo el-ha’arets asher natati livney Yisra’el al asher-meritem et-pi lemey Merivah.
יֵאָסֵף אַהֲרֹן, אֶל-עַמָּיו, כִּי לֹא יָבֹא אֶל-הָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל–עַל אֲשֶׁר-מְרִיתֶם אֶת-פִּי, לְמֵי מְרִיבָה.

20:25
‘[You Moses] take Aaron and his son Eleazar, and bring them up to Hor Mountain.
Kach et-Aharon ve’et-El’azar beno veha’al otam Hor hahar.
קַח, אֶת-אַהֲרֹן, וְאֶת-אֶלְעָזָר, בְּנוֹ; וְהַעַל אֹתָם, הֹר הָהָר.

20:26
Divest Aaron of his vestments and place them on his son Eleazar. Aaron will then be gathered up [to his ancestors] and die there.’
Vehafshet et-Aharon et-begadav vehilbashtam et-El’azar beno ve’Aharon ye’asef umet sham.
וְהַפְשֵׁט אֶת-אַהֲרֹן אֶת-בְּגָדָיו, וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּם אֶת-אֶלְעָזָר בְּנוֹ; וְאַהֲרֹן יֵאָסֵף, וּמֵת שָׁם.

20:27
Moses did as God commanded him. [The three of them] climbed Hor Mountain in the presence of the entire community.
Vaya’as Moshe ka’asher tsivah Adonay vaya’alu el-Hor hahar le’eyney kol-ha’edah.
וַיַּעַשׂ מֹשֶׁה, כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה; וַיַּעֲלוּ אֶל-הֹר הָהָר, לְעֵינֵי כָּל-הָעֵדָה.

20:28
Moses divested Aaron of his vestments, and placed them on [Aaron’s] son Eleazar. Aaron died there on the top of the mountain. When Moses and Eleazar descended from the mountain,
Vayafshet Moshe et-Aharon et-begadav vayalbesh otam et-El’azar beno vayamot Aharon sham berosh hahar vayered Moshe ve’El’azar min-hahar.
וַיַּפְשֵׁט מֹשֶׁה אֶת-אַהֲרֹן אֶת-בְּגָדָיו, וַיַּלְבֵּשׁ אֹתָם אֶת-אֶלְעָזָר בְּנוֹ, וַיָּמָת אַהֲרֹן שָׁם, בְּרֹאשׁ הָהָר; וַיֵּרֶד מֹשֶׁה וְאֶלְעָזָר, מִן-הָהָר.

20:29
the people realized that Aaron had died. The entire family of Israel mourned Aaron for thirty days.
Vayir’u kol-ha’edah ki gava Aharon vayivku et-Aharon shloshim yom kol beyt Yisra’el.
וַיִּרְאוּ, כָּל-הָעֵדָה, כִּי גָוַע, אַהֲרֹן; וַיִּבְכּוּ אֶת-אַהֲרֹן שְׁלֹשִׁים יוֹם, כֹּל בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל.

21:1
When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that the Israelites were traveling along the Atharim Highway, he attacked them and took some captives.
Vayishma haKna’ani melech-Arad yoshev hanegev ki ba Yisra’el derech ha’atarim vayilachem beYisra’el vayishb mimenu shevi.
וַיִּשְׁמַע הַכְּנַעֲנִי מֶלֶךְ-עֲרָד, יֹשֵׁב הַנֶּגֶב, כִּי בָּא יִשְׂרָאֵל, דֶּרֶךְ הָאֲתָרִים; וַיִּלָּחֶם, בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיִּשְׁבְּ מִמֶּנּוּ, שֶׁבִי.

21:2
The Israelites made a vow to God, and said, ‘If You give this nation into our hand, we will render their cities taboo.’
Vayidar Yisra’el neder l’Adonay vayomar im-naton titen et-ha’am hazeh beyadi vehacharamti et-areyhem.
וַיִּדַּר יִשְׂרָאֵל נֶדֶר לַיהוָה, וַיֹּאמַר: אִם-נָתֹן תִּתֵּן אֶת-הָעָם הַזֶּה, בְּיָדִי–וְהַחֲרַמְתִּי, אֶת-עָרֵיהֶם.

21:3
God heard Israel’s voice, and He allowed them to defeat the Canaanites. [The Israelites] declared them and their cities taboo. The place was therefore named Taboo (Charmah).
Vayishma Adonay bekol Yisra’el vayiten et-haKna’ani vayacharem ethem ve’et-areyhem vayikra shem-hamakom Chormah.
וַיִּשְׁמַע יְהוָה בְּקוֹל יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיִּתֵּן אֶת-הַכְּנַעֲנִי, וַיַּחֲרֵם אֶתְהֶם, וְאֶת-עָרֵיהֶם; וַיִּקְרָא שֵׁם-הַמָּקוֹם, חָרְמָה.

21:4
[The Israelites] moved on from Hor Mountain, going by way of the South Sea so as to skirt the territory of Edom. The people began to become discouraged along the way.
Vayis’u meHor hahar derech Yam-Suf lisbov et-erets Edom vatiktsar nefesh-ha’am badarech.
וַיִּסְעוּ מֵהֹר הָהָר, דֶּרֶךְ יַם-סוּף, לִסְבֹב, אֶת-אֶרֶץ אֱדוֹם; וַתִּקְצַר נֶפֶשׁ-הָעָם, בַּדָּרֶךְ.

21:5
The people spoke out against God and Moses, ‘Why did you take us out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread and no water! We are getting disgusted with this insubstantial food.’
Vayedaber ha’am be’Elohim uveMoshe lamah he’elitunu miMitsrayim lamut bamidbar ki eyn lechem ve’eyn mayim venafshenu katsah balechem haklokel.
וַיְדַבֵּר הָעָם, בֵּאלֹהִים וּבְמֹשֶׁה, לָמָה הֶעֱלִיתֻנוּ מִמִּצְרַיִם, לָמוּת בַּמִּדְבָּר: כִּי אֵין לֶחֶם, וְאֵין מַיִם, וְנַפְשֵׁנוּ קָצָה, בַּלֶּחֶם הַקְּלֹקֵל.

21:6
God sent poisonous snakes against the people, and when they began biting the people, a number of Israelites died.
Vayeshalach Adonay ba’am et hanechashim hasrafim vayenashchu et-ha’am vayamot am-rav miYisra’el.
וַיְשַׁלַּח יְהוָה בָּעָם, אֵת הַנְּחָשִׁים הַשְּׂרָפִים, וַיְנַשְּׁכוּ, אֶת-הָעָם; וַיָּמָת עַם-רָב, מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל.

21:7
The people came to Moses and said, ‘We have sinned by speaking against God and you. Pray to God, and have Him take the snakes away from us.’ When Moses prayed for the people,
Vayavo ha’am el-Moshe vayomeru chatanu ki-dibarnu v’Adonay vavach hitpalel el-Adonay veyaser me’aleynu et-hanachash vayitpalel Moshe be’ad ha’am.
וַיָּבֹא הָעָם אֶל-מֹשֶׁה וַיֹּאמְרוּ חָטָאנוּ, כִּי-דִבַּרְנוּ בַיהוָה וָבָךְ–הִתְפַּלֵּל אֶל-יְהוָה, וְיָסֵר מֵעָלֵינוּ אֶת-הַנָּחָשׁ; וַיִּתְפַּלֵּל מֹשֶׁה, בְּעַד הָעָם.

21:8
God said to Moses, ‘Make yourself [the image of] a venomous snake, and place it on a banner. Everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.’
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe aseh lecha saraf vesim oto al-nes vehayah kol-hanashuch vera’ah oto vachay.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-מֹשֶׁה, עֲשֵׂה לְךָ שָׂרָף, וְשִׂים אֹתוֹ, עַל-נֵס; וְהָיָה, כָּל-הַנָּשׁוּךְ, וְרָאָה אֹתוֹ, וָחָי.

21:9
Moses made a copper snake and placed it on a high pole. Whenever a snake bit a man, he would gaze at the copper snake and live.
Vaya’as Moshe nechash nechoshet vayesimehu al-hanes vehayah im-nashach hanachash et-ish vehibit el-nechash hanechoshet vachay.
וַיַּעַשׂ מֹשֶׁה נְחַשׁ נְחֹשֶׁת, וַיְשִׂמֵהוּ עַל-הַנֵּס; וְהָיָה, אִם-נָשַׁךְ הַנָּחָשׁ אֶת-אִישׁ–וְהִבִּיט אֶל-נְחַשׁ הַנְּחֹשֶׁת, וָחָי.
