Numbers 33:1 – 36:13

First Aliyah



33:1
These are the journeys of the Israelites, who had left Egypt in organized groups under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.
Eleh mas’ey veney-Yisra’el asher yats’u me’erets Mitsrayim letsiv’otam beyad-Moshe ve’Aharon.
אֵלֶּה מַסְעֵי בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֲשֶׁר יָצְאוּ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם–לְצִבְאֹתָם: בְּיַד-מֹשֶׁה, וְאַהֲרֹן.

33:2
Moses recorded their stops along the way at God’s command. These were their stops along the way:
Vayichtov Moshe et-motsa’eyhem lemas’eyhem al-pi Adonay ve’eleh mas’eyhem lemotsa’eyhem.
וַיִּכְתֹּב מֹשֶׁה אֶת-מוֹצָאֵיהֶם, לְמַסְעֵיהֶם–עַל-פִּי יְהוָה; וְאֵלֶּה מַסְעֵיהֶם, לְמוֹצָאֵיהֶם.

33:3
[The Israelites] left Ra’meses on the 15th of the first month. On the day after the Passover [sacrifice] the Israelites left triumphantly before the eyes of the Egyptians.
Vayis’u meRamses bachodesh harishon bachamishah asar yom lachodesh harishon mimachorat haPesach yats’u veney-Yisra’el beyad ramah le’eyney kol-Mitsrayim.
יִּסְעוּ מֵרַעְמְסֵס בַּחֹדֶשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן, בַּחֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂר יוֹם לַחֹדֶשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן: מִמָּחֳרַת הַפֶּסַח, יָצְאוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּיָד רָמָה–לְעֵינֵי, כָּל-מִצְרָיִם.

33:4
Egypt was still burying all their first-born, who had been killed by God, and God had destroyed their idols.
UMitsrayim mekabrim et asher hikah Adonay bahem kol-bechor uveloheyhem asah Adonay shfatim.
וּמִצְרַיִם מְקַבְּרִים, אֵת אֲשֶׁר הִכָּה יְהוָה בָּהֶם–כָּל-בְּכוֹר; וּבֵאלֹהֵיהֶם, עָשָׂה יְהוָה שְׁפָטִים.

33:5
The Israelites left Ra’meses and camped in Sukkoth.
Vayis’u veney-Yisra’el meRamses vayachanu beSukot.
וַיִּסְעוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, מֵרַעְמְסֵס; וַיַּחֲנוּ, בְּסֻכֹּת.

33:6
They left Sukkoth, and camped in Etham at the edge of the desert.
Vayis’u miSukot vayachanu ve’Etam asher biktseh hamidbar.
וַיִּסְעוּ, מִסֻּכֹּת; וַיַּחֲנוּ בְאֵתָם, אֲשֶׁר בִּקְצֵה הַמִּדְבָּר.

33:7
They left Etham, and returned to Freedom Valley facing Lord-of-the-North, camping near Tower.
Vayis’u me’Etam vayashov al-pi haChirot asher al-peney Ba’al Tsefon vayachanu lifney Migdol.
וַיִּסְעוּ, מֵאֵתָם, וַיָּשָׁב עַל-פִּי הַחִירֹת, אֲשֶׁר עַל-פְּנֵי בַּעַל צְפוֹן; וַיַּחֲנוּ, לִפְנֵי מִגְדֹּל.

33:8
They left Freedom Valley and crossed the Red Sea toward the desert. They then traveled for three days in the Etham Desert and camped in Marah.
Vayis’u mipney haChirot vaya’avru vetoch-hayam hamidbarah vayelechu derech shloshet yamim bemidbar Etam vayachanu beMarah.
וַיִּסְעוּ מִפְּנֵי הַחִירֹת, וַיַּעַבְרוּ בְתוֹךְ-הַיָּם הַמִּדְבָּרָה; וַיֵּלְכוּ דֶּרֶךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים, בְּמִדְבַּר אֵתָם, וַיַּחֲנוּ, בְּמָרָה.

33:9
They left Marah and came to Elim. In Elim there were twelve water springs and seventy palms, and they camped there.
Vayis’u miMarah vayavo’u Eylimah uve’Eylim shteym esreh eynot mayim veshiv’im tmarim vayachanu-sham.
וַיִּסְעוּ, מִמָּרָה, וַיָּבֹאוּ, אֵילִמָה; וּבְאֵילִם שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה עֵינֹת מַיִם, וְשִׁבְעִים תְּמָרִים–וַיַּחֲנוּ-שָׁם.
