Judges 13.2-25
And there was a certain man of Tzorah, of the tribe of Dan, whose name was Manoach. His wife was barren, and had no children. God’s angel appeared to the woman, and said: “Behold, you are barren, and have no children, but you will conceive, and bear a son. Therefore be careful; do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean. For you will conceive and bear a son. No razor shall touch his head; for the child will be a Nazirite to God from the womb and he will begin to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”
Then the woman went and told her husband, “A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like that of God’s angel, very awe-inspiring, I did not ask him where he was from, and he did not tell me his name; but he said to me ‘Behold, you will conceive and bear a son; you must drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean; for the child will be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’ “
Then Manorach prayed to God and said: “O. God, let the man of God whom You sent come to us again, and teach use what to do with the child who will be born.” God listened to the voice of Manoach; and God’s angel came again to the woman as she sat in the field’ but Manoach her husband was not with her. So the woman quickly ran, and told her husband, “Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me.”
And Manoach arose, went after his wife, came to the man, and said to him “Are you the man who spoke to the woman?” He said “I am.”
Manoach said: “Now when your message comes true, what shall be the child’s way of life, and what shall be done with him?”
God’s angel said to Manoach: “Let the woman be careful to follow my instructions. She must not eat anything made of grapes, drink wine or strong drink, or eat anything unclean. All that I commanded, let her observe.”
Manoach said to God’s angel: “Please, stay with us, and we will prepare a kid for you.”
God’s angel said to Manoach: “Even though you detain me, I will not eat your food. If you will prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to God.” For Manoach did not know that the man was God’s angel.
And Manoach said to God’s angel: “What is your name, so that when your message comes true we may honor you?”
And God’s angel said to him: “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is hidden?”
So Manoach took the kid with the meal offering, and offered it upon the rock to God. The angel did something wondrous,, and Manoach and his wife looked on. For when the flame went up from the altar toward heaven, God’s angel ascended in the altar flame. Manoach and his wife looked and and they fell on their faces on the ground. But God’s angel did not appear again to Manoach or to his wife. Then Manoach knew that he was God’s angel.
Manoach said to his wife: “We will surely die, because we have seen God.”
But his wife said to him; “If God had wanted to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a meal offering from us, nor shown us all these things, nor told us such things as these.”
The woman bore a son, and called him Samson; and the child grew, and God blessed him. And God’s spirit began to move him in Machaneh Dan between Tzoriah and Esthtaol.
