God spoke to Moses, saying:

Vayedaber Adonay el-Moshe lemor.

26:53
Among these [people] you shall divide the land as an inheritance, following a number of names [recorded].

La’eleh techalek ha’arets benachalah bemispar shemot.

26:54
To a larger [group] you shall give a larger inheritance, while to a smaller group, you shall give a smaller inheritance. Each one shall thus be given his hereditary property according to its tally.

Larav tarbeh nachalato velam’at tam’it nachalato ish lefi fkudav yutan nachalato.

26:55
However, hereditary property shall be granted to paternal families through a lottery system. This is how the land shall be divided.

Ach-begoral yechalek et-ha’arets lishmot matot-avotam yinchalu.

26:56
Whether a group is large or small, its hereditary property shall be divided by a lottery system.

Al-pi hagoral techalek nachalato beyn rav lim’at.

26:57
These are the tallies of the Levites by their families: the Gershonite family from Gershon, the Kehothite family from Kehoth, and the Merarite family from Merari.

Ve’eleh fkudey haLevi lemishpechotam le-Gershon mishpachat haGershuni liKehat mishpachat haKehati li-Merari mishpachat haMerari.

26:58
These are the sub-families of Levi: The Libnite family, the Chevronite family, the Machlite family, the Mushite family, and the Korchite family. Kehoth had a son Amram.

Eleh mishpechot Levi mishpachat haLivni mishpachat haChevroni mishpachat haMachli mishpachat haMushi mishpachat haKorchi uKehat holid et-Amram.

26:59
The name of Amram’s wife was Yokheved, a daughter of Levi, who had been born to Levi in Egypt. She bore Amram’s children, Aaron and Moses, as well as their sister Miriam.

Veshem eshet Amram Yocheved bat-Levi asher yaldah otah le-Levi beMistrayim vateled le-Amram et-Aharon ve’et-Moshe ve’et-Miryam achotam.

Born to Aaron were Nadav, Avihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

Vayivaled le-Aharon et-Nadav ve’et-Avihu et-El’azar ve’et-Itamar.

26:61
Nadav and Avihu, however died when they offered unauthorized fire before God.

Vayamot Nadav va’Avihu behakrivam esh-zarah lifney Adonay.

26:62
Counting every male over one month old, the tally of [the Levites] was 23,000. They were not tallied among the other Israelites because they were not to be given hereditary property among the [other] Israelites.

Vayihyu fkudeyhem shloshah ve’esrim elef kol-zachar miben-chodesh vamalah ki lo hotpakdu betoch beney Yisra’el ki lo nitan lahem nachalah betoch beney Yisra’el.

26:63
The above was the census that Moses and Eleazar the priest took of the Israelites in the Western Plains of Moab, on the Jericho section of the Jordan.

26:64
Among those [counted now] there was no one [previously] counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had taken a census of the Israelites in the Sinai Desert.

26:65
This was because God had decreed to them that they would all die in the desert, and that not a single man would survive, with the exception of Caleb son of Yefuneh, and Joshua son of Nun.

Ki-amar Adonay lahem mot yamutu bamidbar velo-notar mehem ish ki im-Kalev ben-Yefuneh viYehoshua bin-Nun.

27:1
A petition was presented by the daughters of Tzelafchad, son of Chefer, son of Gilead, son of Makhir, son of Manasseh, of the family of Joseph’s son Manasseh. The names of these daughters were Machlah, No’ah, Chaglah, Milkah and Tirtzah.

27:2
They now stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the princes, and the entire community at the Communion Tent entrance with the following petition:

Vata’amodnah lifney Moshe velifney El’azar hakohen velifney hanesi’im vechol-ha’edah petach ohel-mo’ed lemor.

27:3
‘Our father died in the desert. He was not among the members of Korach’s party who protested against God, but he died because of his own sin without leaving any sons.

Avinu met bamidbar vehu lo-hayah betoch ha’edah hano’adim al-Adonay ba’adat-Korach ki-vechet’o met uvanim lo-hayu lo.

27:4
Why should our father’s name be disadvantaged in his family merely because he did not have a son? Give us a portion of land along with our father’s brothers.’

27:5
Moses brought their case before God.
