13:1
God spoke to Moses, saying,
Vayedaber Adonay el-Moshe lemor.
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה, אֶל-מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר.
 

13:2
‘Send out men for yourself to explore the Canaanite territory that I am about to give the Israelites. Send out one man for each patriarchal tribe. Each one shall be a person of high rank.’
Shlach-lecha anashim veyaturu et-erets Kena’an asher-ani noten livney Yisra’el ish echad ish echad lemateh avotav tishlachu kol nasi vahem.
שְׁלַח-לְךָ אֲנָשִׁים, וְיָתֻרוּ אֶת-אֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן, אֲשֶׁר-אֲנִי נֹתֵן, לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל: אִישׁ אֶחָד אִישׁ אֶחָד לְמַטֵּה אֲבֹתָיו, תִּשְׁלָחוּ–כֹּל, נָשִׂיא בָהֶם.
 

13:3
Moses sent them from the Paran Desert at God’s bidding. All the men were leaders of the Israelites.
Vayishlach otam Moshe mimidbar Paran al-pi Adonay kulam anashim rashey vney-Yisra’el hemah.
וַיִּשְׁלַח אֹתָם מֹשֶׁה מִמִּדְבַּר פָּארָן, עַל-פִּי יְהוָה: כֻּלָּם אֲנָשִׁים, רָאשֵׁי בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל הֵמָּה.
 

13:4
Their names were as follows: From the tribe of Reuben, Shamua son of Zakur.
Ve’eleh shmotam lemateh Re’uven Shamua ben-Zakur.
וְאֵלֶּה, שְׁמוֹתָם: לְמַטֵּה רְאוּבֵן, שַׁמּוּעַ בֶּן-זַכּוּר.
 

13:5
From the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Chori.
Lemateh Shim’on Shafat ben-Chori.
לְמַטֵּה שִׁמְעוֹן, שָׁפָט בֶּן-חוֹרִי.
 

13:6
From the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Yefuneh.
Lemateh Yehudah Kalev ben-Yefuneh.
לְמַטֵּה יְהוּדָה, כָּלֵב בֶּן-יְפֻנֶּה.
 

13:7
From the tribe of Issachar, Yig’al son of Joseph.
Lemateh Yisachar Yig’al ben-Yosef.
לְמַטֵּה יִשָּׂשכָר, יִגְאָל בֶּן-יוֹסֵף.
 

13:8
From the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun.
Lemateh Efrayim Hoshea bin-Nun.
לְמַטֵּה אֶפְרָיִם, הוֹשֵׁעַ בִּן-נוּן.
 

13:9
From the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu.
Lemateh Vinyamin Palti ben-Rafu.
לְמַטֵּה בִנְיָמִן, פַּלְטִי בֶּן-רָפוּא.
 

13:10
From the tribe of Zebulun, Gadiel son of Sodi.
Lemateh Zvulun Gadi’el ben-Sodi.
לְמַטֵּה זְבוּלֻן, גַּדִּיאֵל בֶּן-סוֹדִי.
 

13:11
From the tribe of Manasseh (from Joseph), Gaddi son of Susi.
Lemateh Yosef lemateh Menasheh Gadi ben-Susi.
לְמַטֵּה יוֹסֵף, לְמַטֵּה מְנַשֶּׁה–גַּדִּי, בֶּן-סוּסִי.
 

13:12
From the tribe of Dan, Amiel son of Gemalli.
Lemateh Dan Ami’el Ben-Gemali.
לְמַטֵּה דָן, עַמִּיאֵל בֶּן-גְּמַלִּי.
 

13:13
From the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael.
Lemateh Asher Setur ben-Micha’el.
לְמַטֵּה אָשֵׁר, סְתוּר בֶּן-מִיכָאֵל.
 

13:14
From the tribe of Naphtali, Nachbi son of Vafsi.
Lemateh Naftali Nachbi ben-Vafsi.
לְמַטֵּה נַפְתָּלִי, נַחְבִּי בֶּן-וָפְסִי.
 

13:15
From the tribe of Gad, Geu’el son of Makhi.
Lemateh Gad Ge’u’el ben-Machi.
לְמַטֵּה גָד, גְּאוּאֵל בֶּן-מָכִי.
 

13:16
These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. [However,] Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the [new] name Joshua (Yehoshua).
Eleh shmot ha’anashim asher-shalach Moshe latur et-ha’arets vayikra Moshe le-Hoshea bin-Nun Yehoshua.
אֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת הָאֲנָשִׁים, אֲשֶׁר-שָׁלַח מֹשֶׁה לָתוּר אֶת-הָאָרֶץ; וַיִּקְרָא מֹשֶׁה לְהוֹשֵׁעַ בִּן-נוּן, יְהוֹשֻׁעַ.
 

13:17
When Moses sent [the men] to explore the Canaanite territory, he said to them, ‘Head north to the Negev, and then continue north to the hill country.
Vayishlach otam Moshe latur et-erets Kena’an vayomer alehem alu zeh baNegev va’alitem et-hahar.
וַיִּשְׁלַח אֹתָם מֹשֶׁה, לָתוּר אֶת-אֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן; וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם, עֲלוּ זֶה בַּנֶּגֶב, וַעֲלִיתֶם, אֶת-הָהָר.
 

13:18
See what kind of land it is. Are the people who live there strong or weak, few or many?
Ure’item et-ha’arets mah-hi ve’et-ha’am hayoshev aleyha hechazak hu harafe hame’at hu im-rav.
וּרְאִיתֶם אֶת-הָאָרֶץ, מַה-הִוא; וְאֶת-הָעָם, הַיֹּשֵׁב עָלֶיהָ–הֶחָזָק הוּא הֲרָפֶה, הַמְעַט הוּא אִם-רָב.
 

13:19
Is the inhabited area good or bad? Are the cities where they live open or fortified?
Umah ha’arets asher-hu yoshev bah hatovah hi im-ra’ah umah he’arim asher-hu yoshev bahenah habemachanim im bemivtsarim.
וּמָה הָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר-הוּא יֹשֵׁב בָּהּ–הֲטוֹבָה הִוא, אִם-רָעָה; וּמָה הֶעָרִים, אֲשֶׁר-הוּא יוֹשֵׁב בָּהֵנָּה–הַבְּמַחֲנִים, אִם בְּמִבְצָרִים.
 

13:20
Is the soil rich or weak? Does [the land] have trees or not? Make a special effort to bring [back] some of the land’s fruits.’ It was the season when the first grapes begin to ripen.
Umah ha’arets hashmenah hi im-razah hayesh-bah ets im-ayin vehitchazaktem ulekachtem mipri ha’arets vehayamim yemey bikurey anavim.
וּמָה הָאָרֶץ הַשְּׁמֵנָה הִוא אִם-רָזָה, הֲיֵשׁ-בָּהּ עֵץ אִם-אַיִן, וְהִתְחַזַּקְתֶּם, וּלְקַחְתֶּם מִפְּרִי הָאָרֶץ; וְהַיָּמִים–יְמֵי, בִּכּוּרֵי עֲנָבִים.
