Genesis 14:1 – 14:20

14:1
It was around this time that Amraphel king of Shinar, Ariokh king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goyim
Vayehi bimey Amrafel melech-Shin’ar Ari’och melech Elasar Kedarla’omer melech Eylam veTid’al melech Goyim.
וַיְהִי, בִּימֵי אַמְרָפֶל מֶלֶךְ-שִׁנְעָר, אַרְיוֹךְ, מֶלֶךְ אֶלָּסָר; כְּדָרְלָעֹמֶר מֶלֶךְ עֵילָם, וְתִדְעָל מֶלֶךְ גּוֹיִם.
 

14:2
waged war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinav king of Admah, Shemever king of Tzevoyim, and the king of Bela (now Tzoar).
Asu milchamah et-Bera melech Sdom ve’et-Birsha melech Amorah Shin’av melech Ademah veShem’ever melech Tsvo’im umelech Bela hi-Tso’ar.
עָשׂוּ מִלְחָמָה, אֶת-בֶּרַע מֶלֶךְ סְדֹם, וְאֶת-בִּרְשַׁע, מֶלֶךְ עֲמֹרָה; שִׁנְאָב מֶלֶךְ אַדְמָה, וְשֶׁמְאֵבֶר מֶלֶךְ צְבֹיִים, וּמֶלֶךְ בֶּלַע, הִיא-צֹעַר.
 

14:3
All of these had come together in Siddim Valley (now the Dead Sea).
Kol-eleh chaveru el-Emek haSidim hu Yam haMelach.
כָּל-אֵלֶּה, חָבְרוּ, אֶל-עֵמֶק, הַשִּׂדִּים: הוּא, יָם הַמֶּלַח.
 

14:4
They had served Chedorlaomer for twelve years, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
Shtem-esreh shanah avdu et-Kedarla’omer ushlosh-esreh shanah maradu.
שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה, עָבְדוּ אֶת-כְּדָרְלָעֹמֶר; וּשְׁלֹשׁ-עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה, מָרָדוּ.
 

14:5
In the fourteenth year, Chedorlaomer and his allied kings came. They defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiryathaim,
Uve’arba esreh shanah ba Chedarla’omer vehamelachim asher ito vayaku et-Refa’im be’Ashterot Karnayim ve’et- haZuzim beHam ve’et ha’Eymim beShaveh Kiryatayim.
וּבְאַרְבַּע עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה בָּא כְדָרְלָעֹמֶר, וְהַמְּלָכִים אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ, וַיַּכּוּ אֶת-רְפָאִים בְּעַשְׁתְּרֹת קַרְנַיִם, וְאֶת-הַזּוּזִים בְּהָם; וְאֵת, הָאֵימִים, בְּשָׁוֵה, קִרְיָתָיִם.
 

14:6
and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, as far as Eyl Paran, which borders the desert.
Ve’et-haChori behareram Seyir ad Eyl Par’an asher al-hamidbar.
וְאֶת-הַחֹרִי, בְּהַרְרָם שֵׂעִיר, עַד אֵיל פָּארָן, אֲשֶׁר עַל-הַמִּדְבָּר.
 

14:7
They then turned back and came to Eyn Mishpat (now Kadesh), and they conquered the entire field of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who lived in Chatzatzon Tamar.
Vayashuvu vayavo’u el-Eyn Mishpat hi Kadesh vayaku et-kol-sedeh ha’Amaleki vegam et-ha’Emori hayoshev beChatsetson Tamar.
וַיָּשֻׁבוּ וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל-עֵין מִשְׁפָּט, הִוא קָדֵשׁ, וַיַּכּוּ, אֶת-כָּל-שְׂדֵה הָעֲמָלֵקִי–וְגַם, אֶת-הָאֱמֹרִי, הַיֹּשֵׁב, בְּחַצְצֹן תָּמָר.
 

14:8
The kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Tzevoyim and Bela (Tzoar) marched forth. They set up battle lines in Siddim Valley,
Vayetse melech-Sdom umelech-Amorah umelech-Ademah umelech Tsvo’im umelech Bela hi-Tso’ar vaya’archu itam milchamah be’Emek haSidim.
וַיֵּצֵא מֶלֶךְ-סְדֹם וּמֶלֶךְ עֲמֹרָה, וּמֶלֶךְ אַדְמָה וּמֶלֶךְ צְבֹיִים, וּמֶלֶךְ בֶּלַע, הִוא-צֹעַר; וַיַּעַרְכוּ אִתָּם מִלְחָמָה, בְּעֵמֶק הַשִּׂדִּים.
 

14:9
against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar. There were four kings against the five.
Et-Kedarla’omer melech Eylam veTid’al melech Goyim ve’Amrafel melech Shin’ar ve’Aryoch melech Elasar arba’ah melachim et-hachamishah.
אֵת כְּדָרְלָעֹמֶר מֶלֶךְ עֵילָם, וְתִדְעָל מֶלֶךְ גּוֹיִם, וְאַמְרָפֶל מֶלֶךְ שִׁנְעָר, וְאַרְיוֹךְ מֶלֶךְ אֶלָּסָר–אַרְבָּעָה מְלָכִים, אֶת-הַחֲמִשָּׁה.
 

14:10
Siddim Valley was full of tar pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah tried to flee, they fell into them. The others fled to the mountains.
Ve’Emek haSidim be’erot be’erot chemar vayanusu melech Sdom va’Amorah vayiplu-shamah vehanish’arim herah nasu.
וְעֵמֶק הַשִּׂדִּים, בֶּאֱרֹת בֶּאֱרֹת חֵמָר, וַיָּנֻסוּ מֶלֶךְ-סְדֹם וַעֲמֹרָה, וַיִּפְּלוּ-שָׁמָּה; וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִים, הֶרָה נָּסוּ.
 

14:11
The victors seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all the food, and they departed.
Vayikchu et-kol-rechush Sedom va’Amorah ve’et-kol-ochlam vayelechu.
וַיִּקְחוּ אֶת-כָּל-רְכֻשׁ סְדֹם וַעֲמֹרָה, וְאֶת-כָּל-אָכְלָם–וַיֵּלֵכוּ.
 

14:12
When they left, they also took Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he had been living in Sodom.
Vayikchu et-Lot ve’et-rechusho ben-achi Avram vayelechu vehu yoshev biSdom.
וַיִּקְחוּ אֶת-לוֹט וְאֶת-רְכֻשׁוֹ בֶּן-אֲחִי אַבְרָם, וַיֵּלֵכוּ; וְהוּא יֹשֵׁב, בִּסְדֹם.
 

14:13
Those who escaped came and brought the news to Abram the Hebrew, who was living undisturbed in the plains of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshkol and Aner. They were Abram’s allies.
Vayavo hapalit vayaged le-Avram ha’Ivri vehu shochen be’eloney Mamre ha’Emori achi Eshkol va’achi Aner vehem ba’aley vrit-Avram.
וַיָּבֹא, הַפָּלִיט, וַיַּגֵּד, לְאַבְרָם הָעִבְרִי; וְהוּא שֹׁכֵן בְּאֵלֹנֵי מַמְרֵא הָאֱמֹרִי, אֲחִי אֶשְׁכֹּל וַאֲחִי עָנֵר, וְהֵם, בַּעֲלֵי בְרִית-אַבְרָם.
 

14:14
When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he called out all his 318 fighting men who had been born in his house. He hurried after the invaders, catching up with them in Dan.
Vayishma Avram ki nishbah achiv vayarek et-chanichav yelidey veyto shmonah asar ushlosh me’ot vayirdof ad-Dan.
וַיִּשְׁמַע אַבְרָם, כִּי נִשְׁבָּה אָחִיו; וַיָּרֶק אֶת-חֲנִיכָיו יְלִידֵי בֵיתוֹ, שְׁמֹנָה עָשָׂר וּשְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת, וַיִּרְדֹּף, עַד-דָּן.
 

14:15
He divided his forces against them [and attacked] that night – he and his servants. He attacked, and pursued the invaders as far as Chovah, which is to the left of Damascus.
Vayechalek aleyhem laylah hu va’avadav vayakem vayirdefem ad-Chovah asher mismol le-Damasek.
וַיֵּחָלֵק עֲלֵיהֶם לַיְלָה הוּא וַעֲבָדָיו, וַיַּכֵּם; וַיִּרְדְּפֵם, עַד-חוֹבָה, אֲשֶׁר מִשְּׂמֹאל, לְדַמָּשֶׂק.
 

14:16
Abram brought back all the property. He also brought back his kinsman Lot and all his goods, along with the women and the other people.
Vayashev et kol-harechush vegam et-Lot achiv urechusho heshiv vegam et-hanashim ve’et ha’am.
וַיָּשֶׁב, אֵת כָּל-הָרְכֻשׁ; וְגַם אֶת-לוֹט אָחִיו וּרְכֻשׁוֹ הֵשִׁיב, וְגַם אֶת-הַנָּשִׁים וְאֶת-הָעָם.
 

14:17
After he returned from his victory over Chedorlaomer and his allied kings, the king of Sodom came out to greet him in Level Valley (now King’s Valley).
Vayetse melech-Sedom likrato acharey shuvo mehakot et-Kdarla’omer ve’et-hamelachim asher ito el-Emek Shaveh hu Emek haMelech.
וַיֵּצֵא מֶלֶךְ-סְדֹם, לִקְרָאתוֹ, אַחֲרֵי שׁוּבוֹ מֵהַכּוֹת אֶת-כְּדָרְלָעֹמֶר, וְאֶת-הַמְּלָכִים אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ–אֶל-עֵמֶק שָׁוֵה, הוּא עֵמֶק הַמֶּלֶךְ.
 

14:18
Malkhi-tzedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine. He was a priest to God, the Most High.
UMalki-Tsedek melech Shalem hotsi lechem vayayin vehu chohen le-El Elyon.
מַלְכִּי-צֶדֶק מֶלֶךְ שָׁלֵם, הוֹצִיא לֶחֶם וָיָיִן; וְהוּא כֹהֵן, לְאֵל עֶלְיוֹן.
 

14:19
He blessed Abram, and said, ‘Blessed be Abram to God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth.
Vayevarechehu vayomar baruch Avram le-El Elyon Koneh shamayim va’arets.
וַיְבָרְכֵהוּ, וַיֹּאמַר: בָּרוּךְ אַבְרָם לְאֵל עֶלְיוֹן, קֹנֵה שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ.
 

14:20
And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.’ [Abram then] gave him a tenth of everything.
Uvaruch El Elyon asher-migen tsareycha beyadecha vayiten-lo ma’aser mikol.
וּבָרוּךְ אֵל עֶלְיוֹן, אֲשֶׁר-מִגֵּן צָרֶיךָ בְּיָדֶךָ; וַיִּתֶּן-לוֹ מַעֲשֵׂר, מִכֹּל.
