Genesis 41:1 – 44:17

42:19
We will see if you are really being candid. One of you will be held hostage in the same building where you were kept under arrest. The rest can go and bring supplies to your hungry families.
Im-kenim atem achichem echad ye’aser beveyt mishmarchem ve’atem lechu havi’u shever ra’avon bateychem.
אִם-כֵּנִים אַתֶּם–אֲחִיכֶם אֶחָד, יֵאָסֵר בְּבֵית מִשְׁמַרְכֶם; וְאַתֶּם לְכוּ הָבִיאוּ, שֶׁבֶר רַעֲבוֹן בָּתֵּיכֶם.
 

42:20
Bring your youngest brother here, and your claim will be substantiated. Then you will not die.’ They agreed to this,
Ve’et-achichem hakaton tavi’u elay veye’amenu divreychem velo tamutu vaya’asu-chen.
וְאֶת-אֲחִיכֶם הַקָּטֹן תָּבִיאוּ אֵלַי, וְיֵאָמְנוּ דִבְרֵיכֶם וְלֹא תָמוּתוּ; וַיַּעֲשׂוּ-כֵן.
 

42:21
but they said to one another, ‘We deserve to be punished because of what we did to our brother. We saw him suffering when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That’s why this great misfortune has come upon us now.’
Vayomeru ish el-achiv aval ashemim anachnu al-achinu asher ra’inu tsarat nafsho behitchaneno eleynu velo shamanu al-ken ba’ah eleynu hatsarah hazot.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל-אָחִיו, אֲבָל אֲשֵׁמִים אֲנַחְנוּ עַל-אָחִינוּ, אֲשֶׁר רָאִינוּ צָרַת נַפְשׁוֹ בְּהִתְחַנְנוֹ אֵלֵינוּ, וְלֹא שָׁמָעְנוּ; עַל-כֵּן בָּאָה אֵלֵינוּ, הַצָּרָה הַזֹּאת.
 

42:22
Reuben interrupted them. ‘Didn’t I tell you not to commit a crime against the boy?’ he said. ‘You wouldn’t listen. Now a [divine] accounting is being demanded for his blood!’
Vaya’an Re’uven otam lemor halo amarti aleychem lemor al-techet’u vayeled velo shematem vegam-damo hineh nidrash.
וַיַּעַן רְאוּבֵן אֹתָם לֵאמֹר, הֲלוֹא אָמַרְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶם לֵאמֹר אַל-תֶּחֶטְאוּ בַיֶּלֶד–וְלֹא שְׁמַעְתֶּם; וְגַם-דָּמוֹ, הִנֵּה נִדְרָשׁ.
 

42:23
Meanwhile, they did not realize that Joseph was listening, since they [had spoken to him] through a translator.
Vehem lo yad’u ki shomea Yosef ki hamelits beynotam.
וְהֵם לֹא יָדְעוּ, כִּי שֹׁמֵעַ יוֹסֵף: כִּי הַמֵּלִיץ, בֵּינֹתָם
 

42:24
Joseph left them and wept. When he returned, he spoke to them sternly again. He had Simeon taken from them and placed in chains before their eyes.
Vayisov me’aleyhem vayevk vayashov alehem vayedaber alehem vayikach me’itam et-Shim’on vaye’esor oto le’eyneyhem.
וַיִּסֹּב מֵעֲלֵיהֶם, וַיֵּבְךְּ; וַיָּשָׁב אֲלֵהֶם, וַיְדַבֵּר אֲלֵהֶם, וַיִּקַּח מֵאִתָּם אֶת-שִׁמְעוֹן, וַיֶּאֱסֹר אֹתוֹ לְעֵינֵיהֶם.
 

42:25
Joseph gave orders that when their bags were filled with grain, each one’s money should also be placed in his sack. They were also to be given provisions for the journey. This was done.
Vayetsav Yosef vayemal’u et-kleyhem bar ulehashiv kaspeyhem ish el-sako velatet lahem tsedah ladarech vaya’as lahem ken.
וַיְצַו יוֹסֵף, וַיְמַלְאוּ אֶת-כְּלֵיהֶם בָּר, וּלְהָשִׁיב כַּסְפֵּיהֶם אִישׁ אֶל-שַׂקּוֹ, וְלָתֵת לָהֶם צֵדָה לַדָּרֶךְ; וַיַּעַשׂ לָהֶם, כֵּן.
 

42:26
[The brothers] then loaded the food they bought on their donkeys, and they departed.
Vayis’u et-shivram al-chamoreyhem vayelechu misham.
וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת-שִׁבְרָם, עַל-חֲמֹרֵיהֶם; וַיֵּלְכוּ, מִשָּׁם.
 

42:27
When they came to the place where they spent the night, one of them opened his sack to feed his donkey. He saw his money right there at the top of his pack.
Vayiftach ha’echad et-sako latet mispo lachamoro bamalon vayar et-kaspo vehineh-hu befi amtachto.
וַיִּפְתַּח הָאֶחָד אֶת-שַׂקּוֹ, לָתֵת מִסְפּוֹא לַחֲמֹרוֹ–בַּמָּלוֹן; וַיַּרְא, אֶת-כַּסְפּוֹ, וְהִנֵּה-הוּא, בְּפִי אַמְתַּחְתּוֹ.
 

42:28
‘My money has been returned!’ he exclaimed to his brothers. ‘It’s in my pack!’ Their hearts sank. ‘What is this that God has done to us?’ they asked each other with trembling voices.
Vayomer el-echav hushav kaspi vegam hineh ve’amtachti vayetse libam vayecherdu ish el-achiv lemor mah-zot asah Elohim lanu.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל-אֶחָיו הוּשַׁב כַּסְפִּי, וְגַם הִנֵּה בְאַמְתַּחְתִּי; וַיֵּצֵא לִבָּם, וַיֶּחֶרְדוּ אִישׁ אֶל-אָחִיו לֵאמֹר, מַה-זֹּאת עָשָׂה אֱלֹהִים, לָנוּ.
 

42:29
When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him about all that had happened to them.
Vayavo’u el-Ya’akov avihem artsah Kena’an vayagidu lo et kol-hakorot otam lemor.
וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל-יַעֲקֹב אֲבִיהֶם, אַרְצָה כְּנָעַן; וַיַּגִּידוּ לוֹ, אֵת כָּל-הַקֹּרֹת אֹתָם לֵאמֹר.
 

42:30
‘The man who was the lord of the land spoke to us harshly,’ they said, ‘and he charged us with spying on the land.
Diber ha’ish adoney ha’arets itanu kashot vayiten otanu kimeraglim et-ha’arets.
דִּבֶּר הָאִישׁ אֲדֹנֵי הָאָרֶץ, אִתָּנוּ–קָשׁוֹת; וַיִּתֵּן אֹתָנוּ, כִּמְרַגְּלִים אֶת-הָאָרֶץ.
 

42:31
We said to him, ‘We are honorable men. We have never been spies.
Vanomer elav kenim anachnu lo hayinu meraglim.
וַנֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו, כֵּנִים אֲנָחְנוּ: לֹא הָיִינוּ, מְרַגְּלִים.
 

42:32
We are twelve brothers, all of the same father. One of us has been lost, and the youngest is now with our father in Canaan.’
Shneym-asar anachnu achim beney avinu ha’echad eynenu vehakaton hayom et-avinu be’erets Kena’an.
שְׁנֵים-עָשָׂר אֲנַחְנוּ אַחִים, בְּנֵי אָבִינוּ; הָאֶחָד אֵינֶנּוּ, וְהַקָּטֹן הַיּוֹם אֶת-אָבִינוּ בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן.
 

42:33
‘The man who was the lord of the land said to us, ‘I have a way of knowing if you are honorable. Leave one of your brothers with me, take [what you need] for your hungry families, and go.
Vayomer eleynu ha’ish adoney ha’arets bezot eda ki chenim atem achichem ha’echad hanichu iti ve’et-ra’avon bateychem kechu valechu.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֵינוּ, הָאִישׁ אֲדֹנֵי הָאָרֶץ, בְּזֹאת אֵדַע, כִּי כֵנִים אַתֶּם: אֲחִיכֶם הָאֶחָד הַנִּיחוּ אִתִּי, וְאֶת-רַעֲבוֹן בָּתֵּיכֶם קְחוּ וָלֵכוּ.
 

42:34
Bring your youngest brother back to me, and then I will know that you are honorable men, and not spies. I will give your brother back to you, and you will be able to do business in [our] land.’ ‘
Vehavi’u et-achichem hakaton elay ve’ede’ah ki lo meraglim atem ki chenim atem et-achichem eten lachem ve’et-ha’arets tischaru
וְהָבִיאוּ אֶת-אֲחִיכֶם הַקָּטֹן, אֵלַי, וְאֵדְעָה כִּי לֹא מְרַגְּלִים אַתֶּם, כִּי כֵנִים אַתֶּם; אֶת-אֲחִיכֶם אֶתֵּן לָכֶם, וְאֶת-הָאָרֶץ תִּסְחָרוּ.
 

42:35
They began emptying their sacks, and each one’s money was [found to be] in his sack. [The brothers] and their father saw the money-bags and they were afraid.
Vayehi hem merikim sakeyhem vehineh-ish tsror-kaspo besako vayir’u et-tserorot kaspeyhem hemah va’avihem vayira’u.
וַיְהִי, הֵם מְרִיקִים שַׂקֵּיהֶם, וְהִנֵּה-אִישׁ צְרוֹר-כַּסְפּוֹ, בְּשַׂקּוֹ; וַיִּרְאוּ אֶת-צְרֹרוֹת כַּסְפֵּיהֶם, הֵמָּה וַאֲבִיהֶם–וַיִּירָאוּ.
 

42:36
Their father Jacob said to them, ‘You’re making me lose my children! Joseph is gone! Simeon is gone! And now you want to take Benjamin! Everything is happening to me!’
Vayomer alehem Ya’akov avihem oti shikaltem Yosef eynenu veShim’on eynenu ve’et-Binyamin tikachu alay hayu chulanah.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם יַעֲקֹב אֲבִיהֶם, אֹתִי שִׁכַּלְתֶּם: יוֹסֵף אֵינֶנּוּ, וְשִׁמְעוֹן אֵינֶנּוּ, וְאֶת-בִּנְיָמִן תִּקָּחוּ, עָלַי הָיוּ כֻלָּנָה.
 

42:37
Reuben tried to reason with his father. ‘If I do not bring [Benjamin] back to you,’ he said, ‘you can put my two sons to death. Let him be my responsibility, and I will bring him back to you.’
Vayomer Re’uven el-aviv lemor et-shney vanay tamit im-lo avi’enu eleycha tnah oto al-yadi va’ani ashivenu eleycha.
וַיֹּאמֶר רְאוּבֵן, אֶל-אָבִיו לֵאמֹר, אֶת-שְׁנֵי בָנַי תָּמִית, אִם-לֹא אֲבִיאֶנּוּ אֵלֶיךָ; תְּנָה אֹתוֹ עַל-יָדִי, וַאֲנִי אֲשִׁיבֶנּוּ אֵלֶיךָ.
 

42:38
‘My son will not go with you!’ replied Jacob. ‘His brother is dead, and he is all I have left. Something may happen to him along the way, and you will bring my white head down to the grave in misery!’
Vayomer lo-yered beni imachem ki-achiv met vehu levado nish’ar ukra’ahu ason baderech asher telchu-vah vehoradetem et-seyvati beyagon she’olah.
וַיֹּאמֶר, לֹא-יֵרֵד בְּנִי עִמָּכֶם: כִּי-אָחִיו מֵת וְהוּא לְבַדּוֹ נִשְׁאָר, וּקְרָאָהוּ אָסוֹן בַּדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר תֵּלְכוּ-בָהּ, וְהוֹרַדְתֶּם אֶת-שֵׂיבָתִי בְּיָגוֹן, שְׁאוֹלָה.
 

43:1
The famine became worse in the area.
Vehara’av kaved ba’arets.
וְהָרָעָב, כָּבֵד בָּאָרֶץ.
 

43:2
When they had used up all the supplies that they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, ‘Go back and get us a little food.’
Veyehi ka’asher kilu le’echol et-hashever asher hevi’u mi-Mitsrayim vayomer aleyhem avihem shuvu shivru-lanu me’at-ochel.
וַיְהִי, כַּאֲשֶׁר כִּלּוּ לֶאֱכֹל אֶת-הַשֶּׁבֶר, אֲשֶׁר הֵבִיאוּ, מִמִּצְרָיִם; וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם אֲבִיהֶם, שֻׁבוּ שִׁבְרוּ-לָנוּ מְעַט-אֹכֶל.
 

43:3
Judah tried to reason with him. He said, ‘The man warned us, ‘Do not appear before me unless your brother is with you.’
Vayomer elav Yehudah lemor ha’ed he’id banu ha’ish lemor lo-tir’u fanay bilti achichem itchem.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו יְהוּדָה, לֵאמֹר: הָעֵד הֵעִד בָּנוּ הָאִישׁ לֵאמֹר לֹא-תִרְאוּ פָנַי, בִּלְתִּי אֲחִיכֶם אִתְּכֶם.
 

43:4
If you consent to send our brother with us, we will go and get you food.
Im-yeshcha meshale’ach et-achinu itanu nerdah venishberah lecha ochel.
אִם-יֶשְׁךָ מְשַׁלֵּחַ אֶת-אָחִינוּ, אִתָּנוּ–נֵרְדָה, וְנִשְׁבְּרָה לְךָ אֹכֶל.
 

43:5
But if you will not send [him], we cannot go. The man told us, ‘Do not appear before me unless your brother is with you.’ ‘
Ve’im eyncha meshale’ach lo nered ki-ha’ish amar eleynu lo-tir’u fanay bilti achichem itchem.
וְאִם-אֵינְךָ מְשַׁלֵּחַ, לֹא נֵרֵד: כִּי-הָאִישׁ אָמַר אֵלֵינוּ, לֹא-תִרְאוּ פָנַי, בִּלְתִּי, אֲחִיכֶם אִתְּכֶם.
 

43:6
Israel said, ‘Why did you do such a terrible thing to me, telling the man that you had another brother?’
Vayomer Yisra’el lamah hare’otem li lehagid la’ish ha’od lachem ach.
וַיֹּאמֶר, יִשְׂרָאֵל, לָמָה הֲרֵעֹתֶם, לִי–לְהַגִּיד לָאִישׁ, הַעוֹד לָכֶם אָח.
 

43:7
[The brothers] replied, ‘The man kept asking about us and our family. He asked, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ We simply answered his questions. How were we to know that he would demand that we bring our brother there?’
Vayomeru sha’ol sha’al-ha’ish lanu ulemoladetenu lemor ha’od avichem chay hayesh lachem ach vanaged-lo al-pi hadevarim ha’eleh hayodoa neda ki yomar horidu et-achichem.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ שָׁאוֹל שָׁאַל-הָאִישׁ לָנוּ וּלְמוֹלַדְתֵּנוּ לֵאמֹר, הַעוֹד אֲבִיכֶם חַי הֲיֵשׁ לָכֶם אָח, וַנַּגֶּד-לוֹ, עַל-פִּי הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה; הֲיָדוֹעַ נֵדַע–כִּי יֹאמַר, הוֹרִידוּ אֶת-אֲחִיכֶם.
 

43:8
‘Send the boy with me,’ said Judah to his father Israel. ‘Let us set out and get going. Let’s live and not die – we, you, and also our children.
Vayomer Yehudah el-Yisra’el aviv shilchah hana’ar iti venakumah venelechah venichyeh velo namut gam-anachnu gam-atah gam-tapenu.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוּדָה אֶל-יִשְׂרָאֵל אָבִיו, שִׁלְחָה הַנַּעַר אִתִּי–וְנָקוּמָה וְנֵלֵכָה; וְנִחְיֶה וְלֹא נָמוּת, גַּם-אֲנַחְנוּ גַם-אַתָּה גַּם-טַפֵּנוּ.
 

43:9
I myself will be responsible for him. You can demand him from my own hand. If I do not bring him back and have him stand before you, I will have sinned for all time.
Anochi e’ervenu miyadi tevakshenu im-lo havi’otiv eleycha vehitsagtiv lefaneycha vechatati lecha kol-hayamim.
אָנֹכִי, אֶעֶרְבֶנּוּ–מִיָּדִי, תְּבַקְשֶׁנּוּ: אִם-לֹא הֲבִיאֹתִיו אֵלֶיךָ וְהִצַּגְתִּיו לְפָנֶיךָ, וְחָטָאתִי לְךָ כָּל-הַיָּמִים.
 

43:10
But if we had not waited so long, we could have been there and back twice by now!’
Ki lule hitmahmahnu ki-atah shavnu zeh fa’amayim.
כִּי, לוּלֵא הִתְמַהְמָהְנוּ–כִּי-עַתָּה שַׁבְנוּ, זֶה פַעֲמָיִם.
 

43:11
Their father Israel said to them, ‘If that’s the way it must be, this is what you must do. Take some of the land’s famous products in your baggage, a little balsam, a little honey, and some gum, resin, pistachio nuts and almonds.
Vayomer alehem Yisra’el avihem im-ken efo zot asu kechu mizimrat ha’arets bichleychem vehoridu la’ish minchah me’at tsari ume’at dvash nechot valot botnim ushkedim.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲבִיהֶם, אִם-כֵּן אֵפוֹא זֹאת עֲשׂוּ–קְחוּ מִזִּמְרַת הָאָרֶץ בִּכְלֵיכֶם, וְהוֹרִידוּ לָאִישׁ מִנְחָה: מְעַט צֳרִי, וּמְעַט דְּבַשׁ, נְכֹאת וָלֹט, בָּטְנִים וּשְׁקֵדִים.
 

43:12
Take along twice as much money, so that you will be able to return the money that was put at the tops of your packs – it might have been an oversight.
Vechesef mishneh kchu veyedchem ve’et-hakesef hamoshav befi amtechoteychem tashivu veyedchem ulay mishgeh hu.
וְכֶסֶף מִשְׁנֶה, קְחוּ בְיֶדְכֶם; וְאֶת-הַכֶּסֶף הַמּוּשָׁב בְּפִי אַמְתְּחֹתֵיכֶם, תָּשִׁיבוּ בְיֶדְכֶם–אוּלַי מִשְׁגֶּה, הוּא.
 

43:13
And your brother – take him. Go and return to the man.
Ve’et-achichem kachu vekumu shuvu el-ha’ish.
וְאֶת-אֲחִיכֶם, קָחוּ; וְקוּמוּ, שׁוּבוּ אֶל-הָאִישׁ.
 

43:14
May God Almighty grant that the man have pity on you and let you go along with your other brother and Benjamin. If I must lose my children, then I will lose them.’
Ve’El Shaday yiten lachem rachamim lifney ha’ish veshilach lachem et-achichem acher ve’et-Binyamin va’ani ka’asher shacholti shachalti.
וְאֵל שַׁדַּי, יִתֵּן לָכֶם רַחֲמִים לִפְנֵי הָאִישׁ, וְשִׁלַּח לָכֶם אֶת-אֲחִיכֶם אַחֵר, וְאֶת-בִּנְיָמִין; וַאֲנִי, כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁכֹלְתִּי שָׁכָלְתִּי.
 

43:15
The brothers took the gift and also brought along twice as much money [as was needed]. They set out with Benjamin and went to Egypt. [Once again] they stood before Joseph.
Vayikchu ha’anashim et-haminchah hazot umishneh-kesef lakchu veyadam ve’et-Binyamin vayakumu vayerdu Mitsrayim vaya’amdu lifney Yosef.
וַיִּקְחוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים אֶת-הַמִּנְחָה הַזֹּאת, וּמִשְׁנֶה-כֶּסֶף לָקְחוּ בְיָדָם וְאֶת-בִּנְיָמִן; וַיָּקֻמוּ וַיֵּרְדוּ מִצְרַיִם, וַיַּעַמְדוּ לִפְנֵי יוֹסֵף.
