47:28
Jacob made Egypt his home for 17 years. He lived to be 147 years old.
Vayechi Ya’akov be’erets Mitsrayim shva esreh shanah vayehi yemey-Ya’akov shney chayav sheva shanim ve’arba’im ume’at shanah.
וַיְחִי יַעֲקֹב בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם, שְׁבַע עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה; וַיְהִי יְמֵי-יַעֲקֹב, שְׁנֵי חַיָּיו–שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים, וְאַרְבָּעִים וּמְאַת שָׁנָה.
 

47:29
When Israel realized that he would soon die, he called for his son Joseph. ‘If you really want to do me a kindness,’ he said, ‘place your hand under my thigh. Act toward me with truth and kindness, and do not bury me in Egypt.
Vayikrevu yemey Yisra’el lamut vayikra liveno le-Yosef vayomer lo im-na matsati chen be’eyneycha sim-na yadecha tachat yerechi ve’asita imadi chesed ve’emet al-na tikbereni beMitsrayim.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים, הִנֵּה נָתַתִּי לָכֶם אֶת-כָּל-עֵשֶׂב זֹרֵעַ זֶרַע אֲשֶׁר עַל-פְּנֵי כָל-הָאָרֶץ, וְאֶת-כָּל-הָעֵץ אֲשֶׁר-בּוֹ פְרִי-עֵץ, זֹרֵעַ זָרַע: לָכֶם יִהְיֶה, לְאָכְלָה.
 

47:30
Let me lie with my fathers. Carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their grave.’ ‘I will do as you say,’ replied [Joseph].
Veshachavti im-avotay unesatani mi-Mitsrayim ukvartani bikevuratam vayomer anochi e’eseh chidvarecha.
וּלְכָל-חַיַּת הָאָרֶץ וּלְכָל-עוֹף הַשָּׁמַיִם וּלְכֹל רוֹמֵשׂ עַל-הָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר-בּוֹ נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה, אֶת-כָּל-יֶרֶק עֵשֶׂב, לְאָכְלָה; וַיְהִי-כֵן.
 

47:31
‘Swear to me,’ said [Jacob]. [Joseph] made an oath to him, and, from where he was on the bed, Israel bowed.
Vayomer hishave’ah li vayishava lo vayishtachu Yisra’el al-rosh hamitah.
וַיַּרְא אֱלֹהִים אֶת-כָּל-אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה, וְהִנֵּה-טוֹב מְאֹד; וַיְהִי-עֶרֶב וַיְהִי-בֹקֶר, יוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁי.
 

48:1
A short time after this, Joseph was told that his father was sick. [Joseph went to his father,] taking his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, along with him.
Vayehi acharey hadevarim ha’eleh vayomer le-Yosef hineh avicha choleh vayikach et-shney vanav imo et-Menasheh ve’et-Efrayim.
וַיְהִי, אַחֲרֵי הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה, וַיֹּאמֶר לְיוֹסֵף, הִנֵּה אָבִיךָ חֹלֶה; וַיִּקַּח אֶת-שְׁנֵי בָנָיו, עִמּוֹ–אֶת-מְנַשֶּׁה, וְאֶת-אֶפְרָיִם.
 

48:2
When Jacob was told that Joseph was coming to him, Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed.
Vayaged le-Ya’akov vayomer hineh bincha Yosef ba eleycha vayitchazek Yisra’el vayeshev al-hamitah.
וַיַּגֵּד לְיַעֲקֹב–וַיֹּאמֶר, הִנֵּה בִּנְךָ יוֹסֵף בָּא אֵלֶיךָ; וַיִּתְחַזֵּק, יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיֵּשֶׁב, עַל-הַמִּטָּה.
 

48:3
Jacob said to Joseph, ‘God Almighty once appeared to me in Luz, in the land of Canaan. He blessed me,
Vayomer Ya’akov el-Yosef El Shaday nir’ah-elay beLuz be’erets Kena’an vayevarech oti.
וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב אֶל-יוֹסֵף, אֵל שַׁדַּי נִרְאָה-אֵלַי בְּלוּז בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן; וַיְבָרֶךְ, אֹתִי.
 

48:4
and said to me, ‘I will make you fruitful and numerous, and have you give rise to an assembly of nations. I will give this land to you and your descendants as their property forever.’
Vayomer elay hineni mafrecha vehirbiticha unetaticha likehal amim venatati et-ha’arets hazot lezar’acha achareycha achuzat olam.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלַי, הִנְנִי מַפְרְךָ וְהִרְבִּיתִךָ, וּנְתַתִּיךָ, לִקְהַל עַמִּים; וְנָתַתִּי אֶת-הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת, לְזַרְעֲךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ–אֲחֻזַּת עוֹלָם.
 

48:5
‘Now, the two sons who were born to you in Egypt before I came here shall be considered as mine. Ephraim and Manasseh shall be just like Reuben and Simeon to me.
Ve’atah shney-vaneycha hanoladim lecha be’erets Mitsrayim ad-bo’i eleycha Mitsraymah li-hem Efrayim uMenasheh kiR’uven veShim’on yihyu-li.
וְעַתָּה שְׁנֵי-בָנֶיךָ הַנּוֹלָדִים לְךָ בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם, עַד-בֹּאִי אֵלֶיךָ מִצְרַיְמָה–לִי-הֵם: אֶפְרַיִם, וּמְנַשֶּׁה–כִּרְאוּבֵן וְשִׁמְעוֹן, יִהְיוּ-לִי.
 

48:6
Any children that you have after them, however, shall be considered yours. They shall inherit only through their [older] brothers.
Umoladetecha asher-holadeta achareyhem lecha yihyu al shem acheyhem yikare’u benachalatam.
וּמוֹלַדְתְּךָ אֲשֶׁר-הוֹלַדְתָּ אַחֲרֵיהֶם, לְךָ יִהְיוּ; עַל שֵׁם אֲחֵיהֶם יִקָּרְאוּ, בְּנַחֲלָתָם.
 

48:7
‘When I was coming from Padan, [your mother] Rachel died on me. It was in Canaan, a short distance before we came to Ephrath. I buried her there along the road to Ephrath (Bethlehem).’
Va’ani bevo’i mi-Padan metah alay Rachel be’erets Kena’an baderech be’od kivrat-erets lavo Efratah va’ekbereha sham bederech Efrat hi Beyt Lachem.
וַאֲנִי בְּבֹאִי מִפַּדָּן, מֵתָה עָלַי רָחֵל בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן בַּדֶּרֶךְ, בְּעוֹד כִּבְרַת-אֶרֶץ, לָבֹא אֶפְרָתָה; וָאֶקְבְּרֶהָ שָּׁם בְּדֶרֶךְ אֶפְרָת, הִוא בֵּית לָחֶם.
 

48:8
Israel saw Joseph’s sons. ‘Who are these?’ he asked.
Vayar Yisra’el et-beney Yosef vayomer mi-eleh.
וַיַּרְא יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶת-בְּנֵי יוֹסֵף; וַיֹּאמֶר, מִי-אֵלֶּה.
 

48:9
‘They are the sons that God gave me here,’ replied Joseph to his father. ‘If you would, bring them to me,’ said [Jacob]. ‘I will give them a blessing.’
Vayomer Yosef el-aviv banay hem asher-natan-li Elohim bazeh vayomar kachem-na elay va’avarachem.
וַיֹּאמֶר יוֹסֵף, אֶל-אָבִיו, בָּנַי הֵם, אֲשֶׁר-נָתַן-לִי אֱלֹהִים בָּזֶה; וַיֹּאמַר, קָחֶם-נָא אֵלַי וַאֲבָרְכֵם.
