VaYechi (וַיְחִי)

Genesis 47:28 – 50:26

Second Aliyah

48:10
Israel’s eyes were heavy with age, and he could not see. When [Joseph] brought [his sons] near him, [Israel] kissed them and hugged them.
Ve’eyney Yisra’el kavdu mizoken lo yuchal lir’ot vayagesh otam elav vayishak lahem vayechabek lahem.

48:11
‘I never even hoped to see your face,’ said Israel to Joseph. ‘But now God has even let me see your children.’
Vayomer Yisra’el el-Yosef re’oh faneycha lo filalti vehineh her’ah oti Elohim gam et-zar’echa.

48:12
Joseph took [the boys] from near his [father’s] lap, and he bowed down to the ground.
Vayotse Yosef otam me’im birkav vayishtachu le’apav artsah.

48:13
Joseph then took the two boys. He placed Ephraim to his right (to Israel’s left), and Manasseh to his left (to Israel’s right). He then came close to [his father].
Vayikach Yosef et-shneyhem et-Efrayim bimino mismol Yisra’el ve’et-Menasheh vismolo mimin Yisra’el vayagesh elav.

48:14
Israel reached out with his right hand and placed it on Ephraim’s head [even though] he was the younger son. He [placed] his left hand on Manasseh’s head. He deliberately crossed his hands, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.
Vayishlach Yisra’el et-yemino vayashet al-rosh Efrayim vehu hatsa’ir ve’et-smolo al-rosh Menasheh sikel et-yadav ki Menasheh habechor.

48:15
[Jacob] gave Joseph a blessing. He said, ‘The God before whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, walked, is the God who has been my Shepherd from as far back as I can remember until this day,
Vayevarech et-Yosef vayomar ha’Elohim asher hithalechu avotay lefanav Avraham veYitschak ha’Elohim haRo’eh oti me’odi ad-hayom hazeh.

48:16
[sending] an angel to deliver me from all evil. May He bless the lads, and let them carry my name, along with the names of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac. May they increase in the land like fish.’
Hamal’ach hago’el oti mikol-ra yevarech et-hane’arim veyikare vahem shemi veshem avotay Avraham veYitschak veyidgu larov bekerev ha’arets.
