Haftara VaYeshev

Amos 2.6-3.8

Thus says God: For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four, I will not revoke [the punishment]; because they sell the righteous for silver, and the poor a pair of shoes. They pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the humble. A man and his father defile the same girl, corrupting My holy name. They lay themselves down beside every altar on pledged garments, and they drink the wine of those who have been fined in the house of their God.

Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and who was a strong as the oaks, I destroyed his fruit above, and his roots below. Also, I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the desert, to posses the land of the Amorite.  And I chose some of your sons to be prophets, and some of your men for Nazirites. Is it not indeed so, O children of Israel? says God. But you made the Nazirites drink wine; and commanded the prophets, saying, “Do not prophesy.”

Therefore, I will press you down, as a cart full of sheaves presses down. Flight will fail the swift, and the strong will not retain their strength; nor will the mighty save himself. The archer will not stand; the swift runner will not be saved; and the best horseman will not save his life. The most courageous of the might will flee naked on that day, says God.

Hear this word that God has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying: Of all of the families on earth, I have known only you, therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.

Can two walk together without having agreed?

Will a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Will a young lion growl from his den, if he has taken nothing? Will a bird fall in a snare on the earth where there is no bait for it? Will a snare spring up from the ground, if it has taken nothing? If a shofar is sounded in the city, shall the people not tremble? Will evil befall a city, unless God has done it?

Surely God your Lord will do nothing without revealing His counsel to his servants the prophets.

The lion has roared, who will not fear? God your Lord has spoken, who can but prophesy?
