VaYetze (וַיֵּצֵא)

Genesis 28:10 – 32:3

Fifth Aliyah

30:28
‘Just name your price!’ said [Laban]. ‘I will give it!’
Vayomar nakvah secharecha alay ve’etenah.

30:29
‘You know full well how I worked for you,’ replied [Jacob], ‘and how your livestock fared with me.
Vayomer elav atah yadata et asher avadeticha ve’et asher-hayah miknecha iti.

30:30
You had very little before I came, but since then it has increased and become very substantial. God blessed you with my coming. But when will I do something to build my own estate?’
Ki me’at asher-hayah lecha lefanay vayifrots larov vayevarech Adonay otcha leragli ve’atah matay e’eseh gam-anochi leveyti.

30:31
‘What shall I give you?’ ‘Do not give me anything. Just do this one thing for me. I will come back and tend your sheep, giving them the best care.
Vayomer mah eten-lach vayomer Ya’akov lo-titen-li me’umah im-ta’aseh-li hadavar hazeh ashuvah er’eh tsoncha eshmor.

30:32
I will go through all your flocks [with you] today. Remove every lamb that is spotted or streaked, every sheep that has dark markings. [Also remove] every goat that is streaked or spotted. It is with that kind that I will be paid.
E’evor bechol-tsoncha hayom haser misham kol-seh nakod vetalu vechol-seh-chum baksavim vetalu venakod ba’izim vahayah sechari.

30:33
‘In the future, this will be a sign of my honesty. I will let you inspect all that I have taken as my pay. Any goat that is not spotted or streaked, or any sheep without dark markings, that is in my possession can be considered stolen.’
Ve’antah-bi tsidkati beyom machar ki-tavo al-schari lefaneycha kol asher-eyneynu nakod vetalu ba’izim vechum baksavim ganuv hu iti.

30:34
‘Agreed!’ replied Laban. ‘May your words only come true!’
Vayomer Lavan hen lu yehi chidvarecha.

30:35
That day, [Laban] removed the ringed and streaked he-goats, and all the spotted and streaked she-goats – every one with a trace of white. [He also removed] every sheep with dark markings. These he gave to his sons.
Vayasar bayom hahu et-hateyashim ha’akudim vehatlu’im ve’et kol-ha’izim hanekudot vehatlu’ot kol-asher-Lavan bo vechol-chum baksavim vayiten beyad-banav.

30:36
He then separated himself from Jacob by the distance of a three day journey. Jacob was left tending Laban’s remaining sheep.
Vayasem derech shloshet yamim beyno uveyn Ya’akov veYa’akov ro’eh et-tson Lavan hanotarot.

30:37
Jacob took wands of fresh storax, almond and plane. He peeled white stripes in them by uncovering the white layer under the wands’ [bark].
Vayikach-lo Ya’akov makal livneh lach veluz ve’armon vayefatsel bahen petsalot levanot machsof halavan asher al-hamaklot.

30:38
He set up the wands that he peeled near the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink, facing the animals. It was when they came to drink that they usually mated.
Vayatseg et-hamaklot asher pitsel barehatim beshikatot hamayim asher tavona hatson lishtot lenochach hatson vayechamnah bevo’an lishtot.

30:39
The animals mated in the presence of the wands, and the young they bore were ringed, spotted and streaked.
Vayechemu hatson el-hamaklot vateladnah hatson akudim nekudim utlu’im.

30:40
Jacob segregated the young animals. Still, he made the animals in Laban’s flocks look at the ringed ones and all those with dark markings. But he bred his own flocks separately, and did not let them breed with Laban’s flocks.
Vehaksavim hifrid Ya’akov vayiten peney hatson el-akod vechol-chum betson Lavan vayashet lo adarim levado velo shatam al-tson Lavan.

30:41
Whenever the stronger animals mated, Jacob placed the wands before their eyes at the troughs, so that they would mate facing the wands.
Vehayah bechol-yachem hatson hamekusharot vesam Ya’akov et-hamaklot le’eyney hatson barehatim leyachmenah bamaklot.

30:42
But when the sheep were feeble, he did not place [the wands]. The feeble ones thus went to Laban, while Jacob got the stronger ones

30:43
In this manner, the man became tremendously wealthy. He had many sheep and goats, as well as slaves, slave-girls, camels and donkeys.
Vayifrots ha’ish me’od me’od vayehi-lo tson rabot ushfachot va’avadim ugmalim vachamorim.

31:1
[Jacob] began to hear that Laban’s sons were saying, ‘Jacob has taken everything belonging to our father. He has become rich by taking our father’s property!’

31:2
When Jacob saw Laban in person, [Laban also] did not behave to him as he did before.
Vayar Ya’akov et-peney Lavan vehineh eynenu imo kitmol shilshom.

31:3
God said to Jacob, ‘Go back to your birthplace in the land of your fathers. I will be with you.’
Vayomer Adonay el-Ya’akov shuv el-erets avoteycha ulemoladetecha ve’ehyeh imach.

31:4
Jacob sent word and summoned Rachel and Leah to the field where his flock was.
Vayishlach Ya’akov vayikra le-Rachel ule-Leah hasadeh el-tsono.

31:5
‘I saw your father’s face,’ he said. ‘He is not acting the same with me as he used to. But the God of my father has been with me.
Vayomer lahen ro’eh anochi et-pney avichen ki-eynenu elay kitmol shilshom v’Elohey avi hayah imadi.

31:6
‘You know full well that I served your father with all my strength.
Ve’atenah yedaten ki bechol-kochi avadeti et-avichen.

31:7
Your father swindled me and changed his mind about my pay at least ten times, but God would not let him harm me.
Va’avichen hetel bi vehechelif et-maskurti aseret monim velo-netano Elohim lehara imadi.

31:8
If he said, ‘Your pay will be the spotted ones,’ then all the animals gave birth to spotted young. If he said, ‘Ringed ones will be your wage,’ then all the animals dropped ringed ones.
Im-ko yomar nekudim yihyeh secharecha veyaldu chol-hatson nekudim ve’im-ko yomar akudim yihyeh secharecha veyaldu chol-hatson akudim.

31:9
God thus eroded your father’s livestock and gave it to me.
Vayatsel Elohim et-mikneh avichem vayiten-li.

31:10
‘During the breeding season, I suddenly had a vision. I saw that the bucks mounting the sheep were ringed, spotted and flecked.

31:11
‘An angel called to me in God’s name, ‘Jacob!’ – and I replied ‘Yes.’

31:12
He said, ‘Raise your eyes, and you will see that the bucks mounting the sheep are ringed, spotted and flecked. Let this be a sign that I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.
Vayomer sa-na eyneycha ur’eh kol-ha’atudim ha’olim al-hatson akudim nekudim uverudim ki ra’iti et kol-asher Lavan oseh lach.

31:13
I am the God of Beth El, where you anointed a pillar and made an oath to Me. Now set out and leave this land. Return to the land where you were born.’

31:14
Rachel and Leah both spoke up. ‘Do we then still have a portion and an inheritance in our father’s estate?’ they exclaimed. ‘Why, he treats us like strangers!
Vata’an Rachel veLeah vatomarnah lo ha’od lanu chelek venachalah beveyt avinu.

31:16
All the wealth that God has taken from our father actually belongs to us and our children. Now, whatever God has said to you, do it!’
