32:4
Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau, to Edom’s Field in the Seir area.

32:5
He instructed them to deliver the following message: ‘To my lord Esau. Your humble servant Jacob says: I have been staying with Laban, and have delayed my return until now.
Vayetsav otam lemor koh tomrun ladoni le-Esav koh amar avdecha Ya’akov im-Lavan garti va’echar ad-atah.

32:6
I have acquired cattle, donkeys, sheep, slaves and slave-girls, and am now sending word to tell my lord, to gain favor in your eyes.’
Vayehi-li shor vachamor tson ve’eved veshifchah va’eshlechah lehagid ladoni limtso-chen be’eyneycha.

32:7
The messengers returned to Jacob with the report: ‘We came to your brother Esau, and he is also heading toward you. He has 400 men with him.’
Vayashuvu hamal’achim el-Ya’akov lemor banu el-achicha el-Esav vegam holech likratcha ve’arba-me’ot ish imo.

32:8
Jacob was very frightened and distressed. He divided the people accompanying him into two camps, along with the sheep, cattle and camels.

32:9
He said, ‘If Esau comes and attacks one camp, at least the other camp will survive.’
Vayomer im-yavo Esav el-hamachaneh ha’achat vehikahu vehayah hamachaneh hanish’ar lifleytah.

32:10
Jacob prayed: ‘O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac. You Yourself told me, ‘Return to the land where you were born, and I will make things go well with you.’
Vayomer Ya’akov Elohey avi Avraham ve’Elohey avi Yitschak Adonay ha’omer elay shuv le’artsecha ulemoladetecha ve’eytivah imach.

32:11
I am unworthy of all the kindness and faith that You have shown me. [When I left home,] I crossed the Jordan with [only] my staff, and now I have enough for two camps.
Katonti mikol hachasadim umikol-ha’emet asher asita et-avdecha ki vemakli avarti et-haYarden hazeh ve’atah hayiti lishney machanot.

32:12
Rescue me, I pray, from the hand of my brother – from the hand of Esau. I am afraid of him, for he can come and kill us all – mothers and children alike.

32:13
You once said, ‘I will make things go well with you, and make your descendants like the sand grains of the sea, which are too numerous to count.’
Ve’atah amarta heytev eytiv imach vesamti et-zar’acha kechol hayam asher lo-yisafer merov.
