Deuteronomy 1:1 – 3:22

First Aliyah



 

1:1
These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel on the east bank of the Jordan, in the desert [and] in the Aravah, near Suf, in the vicinity of Paran, Tofel, Lavan, Chatzeroth and Di Zahav.
Eleh hadevarim asher diber Moshe el-kol-Yisra’el be’ever haYarden bamidbar ba’Aravah mol Suf beyn-Paran uveyn-Tofel veLavan vaChatserot veDi Zahav.
אֵלֶּה הַדְּבָרִים, אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר מֹשֶׁה אֶל-כָּל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּעֵבֶר, הַיַּרְדֵּן: בַּמִּדְבָּר בָּעֲרָבָה מוֹל סוּף בֵּין-פָּארָן וּבֵין-תֹּפֶל, וְלָבָן וַחֲצֵרֹת–וְדִי זָהָב.
 

1:2
[This is in the area] which is an eleven day journey from Horeb to Kadesh Barnea by way of the Seir highlands.
Achad asar yom meChorev derech har-Se’ir ad Kadesh Barnea.
אַחַד עָשָׂר יוֹם מֵחֹרֵב, דֶּרֶךְ הַר-שֵׂעִיר, עַד, קָדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַ.
 

1:3
On the first of the eleventh month in the fortieth year, Moses [also] spoke to the Israelites regarding all that God had commanded him for them.
Vayehi be’arba’im shanah be’ashtey-asar chodesh be’echad lachodesh diber Moshe el-beney Yisra’el kechol asher tsivah Adonay oto alehem.
וַיְהִי בְּאַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה, בְּעַשְׁתֵּי-עָשָׂר חֹדֶשׁ בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ; דִּבֶּר מֹשֶׁה, אֶל-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה אֹתוֹ, אֲלֵהֶם.
 

1:4
This was after he had defeated Sichon king of the Amorites who lived in Cheshbon, and Og, king of the Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth, [who was defeated in] Edre’i.
Acharey hakoto et Sichon melech ha’Emori asher yoshev beCheshbon ve’et Og melech haBashan asher-yoshev be’Ashtarot be’Edre’i.
אַחֲרֵי הַכֹּתוֹ, אֵת סִיחֹן מֶלֶךְ הָאֱמֹרִי, אֲשֶׁר יוֹשֵׁב, בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן–וְאֵת, עוֹג מֶלֶךְ הַבָּשָׁן, אֲשֶׁר-יוֹשֵׁב בְּעַשְׁתָּרֹת, בְּאֶדְרֶעִי.
 

1:5
Moses began to explain this law on the east bank of the Jordan, in the land of Moab, saying:
Be’ever haYarden be’erets Mo’av ho’il Moshe be’er et-hatorah hazot lemor.
בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן, בְּאֶרֶץ מוֹאָב, הוֹאִיל מֹשֶׁה, בֵּאֵר אֶת-הַתּוֹרָה הַזֹּאת לֵאמֹר.
 

1:6
God our Lord spoke to us at Horeb, saying, ‘You have remained near this mountain too long.
Adonay Eloheynu diber eleynu beChorev lemor rav-lachem shevet bahar hazeh.
יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ דִּבֶּר אֵלֵינוּ, בְּחֹרֵב לֵאמֹר: רַב-לָכֶם שֶׁבֶת, בָּהָר הַזֶּה.
 

1:7
Turn around and head toward the Amorite highlands and all its neighboring territories in the Aravah, the hill country, the lowlands, the Negev, the seashore, the Canaanite territory, and Lebanon, as far as the Euphrates River.
Penu use’u lachem uvo’u har ha’Emori ve’el-kol-shchenav ba’Aravah vahar uvashfelah uvaNegev uvechof hayam erets haKna’ani vehaLevanon ad-hanahar hagadol nehar Perat.
פְּנוּ וּסְעוּ לָכֶם, וּבֹאוּ הַר הָאֱמֹרִי וְאֶל-כָּל-שְׁכֵנָיו, בָּעֲרָבָה בָהָר וּבַשְּׁפֵלָה וּבַנֶּגֶב, וּבְחוֹף הַיָּם–אֶרֶץ הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַלְּבָנוֹן, עַד-הַנָּהָר הַגָּדֹל נְהַר-פְּרָת.
 

1:8
See! I have placed the land before you. Come, occupy the land that God swore He would give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them.’
Re’eh natati lifneychem et-ha’arets bo’u ureshu et-ha’arets asher nishba Adonay la’avoteychem le-Avraham le-Yitschak ule-Ya’akov latet lahem ulezar’am achareyhem.
רְאֵה נָתַתִּי לִפְנֵיכֶם, אֶת-הָאָרֶץ; בֹּאוּ, וּרְשׁוּ אֶת-הָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע יְהוָה לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם לְאַבְרָהָם לְיִצְחָק וּלְיַעֲקֹב לָתֵת לָהֶם, וּלְזַרְעָם אַחֲרֵיהֶם.
 

1:9
I then said to you, ‘I cannot lead you all by myself.
Va’omar alechem ba’et hahi lemor lo-uchal levadi set etchem.
וָאֹמַר אֲלֵכֶם, בָּעֵת הַהִוא לֵאמֹר: לֹא-אוּכַל לְבַדִּי, שְׂאֵת אֶתְכֶם.
 

1:10
God your Lord has increased your numbers until you are [now] as many as the stars of the sky.
Adonay Eloheychem hirbah etchem vehinechem hayom kechochvey hashamayim larov.
יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם, הִרְבָּה אֶתְכֶם; וְהִנְּכֶם הַיּוֹם, כְּכוֹכְבֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם לָרֹב.
