Ekev (עֵקֶב)

Deuteronomy 7:12 – 11:25

First Aliyah

7:12
If only you listen to these laws, safeguarding and keeping them, then God your Lord will keep the covenant and love with which He made an oath to your fathers.

7:13
He will love you, bless you and make you numerous. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your land, your grain, your wine, your oil, the calves of your herds, and the lambs of your flocks, in the land that He promised your fathers that He would give to you.

7:14
You will be blessed above all nations. Among you and your livestock, there will not be any sterile or barren.

7:15
God will take all sickness from you. He will not allow any of the terrible Egyptian afflictions that you experienced to affect you; instead, He will direct them against all your enemies.
Vehesir Adonay mimecha kol-choli vechol-madvey Mitsrayim hara’im asher yadata lo yesimam bach unetanam bechol-son’eycha.

7:16
When you consume all the nations that God your Lord is giving you, do not show them any pity. Do not worship their gods, since this will be a deadly trap for you.
Ve’achalta et-kol-ha’amim asher Adonay Eloheycha noten lach lo-tachos eynecha aleyhem velo ta’avod et-Eloheyhem ki-mokesh hu lach.

7:17
You might say to yourself, ‘These nations are more numerous than we are. How will we be able to drive them out?

7:18
Do not be afraid of them. You must remember what God did to Pharaoh and all the rest of Egypt.
Lo tira mehem zachor tizkor et asher-asah Adonay Eloheycha le-Far’oh ulechol-Mitsrayim.

7:19
[Recall] the great miracles that you saw with your own eyes – the signs, the wonders, the mighty hand and the outstretched arm with which God your Lord brought you out of Egypt. God will do the same to all the nations whom you fear.
Hamasot hagdolot asher-ra’u eyneycha veha’otot vehamoftim vehayad hachazakah vehazroa hanetuyah asher hotsi’acha Adonay Eloheycha ken-ya’aseh Adonay Eloheycha lechol-ha’amim asher-atah yare mipneyhem.

7:20
God your Lord will also send deadly hornets to attack them, so that the survivors hiding from you will also be destroyed.
Vegam et-hatsir’ah yeshalach Adonay Eloheycha bam ad-avod hanish’arim vehanistarim mipaneycha.

7:21
Do not cringe before [these nations]. God your Lord is with you – a great and awesome God.
Lo ta’arots mipneyhem ki-Adonay Eloheycha bekirbecha El gadol venora.

7:22
God will uproot these nations before you little by little. You will not be allowed to finish them off too quickly, so that the wild animals not overwhelm you.
Venashal Adonay Eloheycha et-hagoyim ha’el mipaneycha me’at me’at lo tuchal kalotam maher pen-tirbeh aleycha chayat hasadeh.

7:23
God will place [these nations] in your power. He will throw them into utter panic until they are destroyed.
Unetanam Adonay Eloheycha lefaneycha vehamam mehumah gedolah ad hishamedam.

7:24
He will place their kings in your power, and you will obliterate their names from under the heavens. No man will stand up before you until you destroy them.
Venatan malcheyhem beyadecha veha’avadeta et-shmam mitachat hashamayim lo-yityatsev ish befaneycha ad hishmidecha otam.

7:25
You must burn their idolatrous statues in fire. Do not desire the gold and silver on [these statues] and take it for yourselves. Let it not bring you into a deadly trap, since it is something offensive to God your Lord.
Psiley eloheyhem tisrefun ba’esh lo-tachmod kesef vezahav aleyhem velakachta lach pen tivakesh bo ki to’avat Adonay Eloheycha hu.

7:26
Do not bring any offensive [idol] into your house, since you may become just like it. Shun it totally and consider it absolutely offensive, since it is taboo.
Velo-tavi to’evah el-beytecha vehayita cherem kamohu shakets teshaketsenu veta’ev teta’avenu ki-cherem hu.

8:1
You must safeguard and keep the entire mandate that I am prescribing to you today. You will then survive, flourish, and come to occupy the land that God swore to your fathers.

8:2
Remember the entire path along which God your Lord led you these forty years in the desert. He sent hardships to test you, to determine what is in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.
Vezacharta et-kol-haderech asher holichecha Adonay Eloheycha zeh arba’im shanah bamidbar lema’an anotecha lenasotcha lada’at et-asher bilvavecha hatishmor mitsvotav im-lo.

8:3
He made life difficult for you, letting you go hungry, and then He fed you the Manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had ever experienced. This was to teach you that it is not by bread alone that man lives, but by all that comes out of God’s mouth.
Vayanecha vayar’ivecha vaya’achilcha et-haman asher lo-yadata velo yade’un avoteycha lema’an hodi’acha ki lo al-halechem levado yichyeh ha’adam ki al-kol-motsa fi-Adonay yichyeh ha’adam.

8:4
The clothing you wore did not become tattered, and your feet did not become bruised these forty years.
Simlatecha lo valtah me’aleycha veraglecha lo vatsekah zeh arba’im shanah.

8:5
You must thus meditate on the fact that just as a man might chastise his child, so God your Lord is chastising you.
Veyadata im-levavecha ki ka’asher yeyaser ish et-beno Adonay Eloheycha meyasreka.

8:6
Safeguard the commandments of God your Lord, so that you will walk in His ways and remain in awe of Him.
Veshamarta et-mitsvot Adonay Eloheycha lalechet bidrachav uleyir’ah oto.

8:7
God your Lord is bringing you to a good land – a land with flowing streams, and underground springs gushing out in valley and mountain.
Ki Adonay Eloheycha mevi’acha el-erets tovah erets nachaley mayim ayanot utehomot yotse’im babik’ah uvahar.

8:8
It is a land of wheat, barley, grapes, figs and pomegranates – a land of oil-olives and honey-[dates].
Erets chitah use’orah vegefen ute’enah verimon erets-zeyt shemen udvash.

8:9
It is a land where you will not eat rationed bread, and you will not lack anything – a land whose stones are iron, and from whose mountains you will quarry copper.
Erets asher lo vemiskenut tochal-bah lechem lo-techsar kol bah erets asher avaneyha varzel umeharareyha tachtsov nechoshet.

8:10
When you eat and are satisfied, you must therefore bless God your Lord for the good land that He has given you.
Ve’achalta vesavata uverachta et-Adonay Eloheycha al-ha’arets hatovah asher natan-lach.
