Deuteronomy 3:23 – 7:11

First Aliyah



 

3:23
At that time I pleaded with God, saying,
Va’etchanan el-Adonay ba’et hahi lemor.
וָאֶתְחַנַּן, אֶל-יְהוָה, בָּעֵת הַהִוא, לֵאמֹר.
 

3:24
‘O God, Lord! You have begun to show me Your greatness and Your display of power. What Force is there in heaven or earth who can perform deeds and mighty acts as You do?
Adonay Elohim atah hachilota lehar’ot et-avdecha et-godlecha ve’et-yadecha hachazakah asher mi-El bashamayim uva’arets asher-ya’aseh chema’aseycha vechigvurotecha.
אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, אַתָּה הַחִלּוֹתָ לְהַרְאוֹת אֶת-עַבְדְּךָ, אֶת-גָּדְלְךָ, וְאֶת-יָדְךָ הַחֲזָקָה–אֲשֶׁר מִי-אֵל בַּשָּׁמַיִם וּבָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר-יַעֲשֶׂה כְמַעֲשֶׂיךָ וְכִגְבוּרֹתֶךָ.
 

3:25
Please let me cross [the Jordan]. Let me see the good land across the Jordan, the good mountain and the Lebanon.
Ebrah-na ve’er’eh et-ha’arets hatovah asher be’ever haYarden hahar hatov hazeh vehaLevanon.
אֶעְבְּרָה-נָּא, וְאֶרְאֶה אֶת-הָאָרֶץ הַטּוֹבָה, אֲשֶׁר, בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן: הָהָר הַטּוֹב הַזֶּה, וְהַלְּבָנֹן.
 

3:26
But God had turned Himself against me because of you, and He would not listen to me. God said to me, ‘Enough! Do not speak to Me any more about this!
Vayit’aber Adonay bi lema’anchem velo shama elay vayomer Adonay elay rav-lach al-tosef daber elay od badavar hazeh.
וַיִּתְעַבֵּר יְהוָה בִּי לְמַעַנְכֶם, וְלֹא שָׁמַע אֵלָי; וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֵלַי, רַב-לָךְ–אַל-תּוֹסֶף דַּבֵּר אֵלַי עוֹד, בַּדָּבָר הַזֶּה.
 

3:27
Climb to the top of the cliff, and gaze to the west, north, south and east. Let your eyes feast on it, since you will not cross the Jordan.
Aleh rosh haPisgah vesa eyneycha yamah vetsafonah veteymanah umizrachah ur’eh ve’eyneycha ki-lo ta’avor et-haYarden hazeh.
עֲלֵה רֹאשׁ הַפִּסְגָּה, וְשָׂא עֵינֶיךָ יָמָּה וְצָפֹנָה וְתֵימָנָה וּמִזְרָחָה–וּרְאֵה בְעֵינֶיךָ: כִּי-לֹא תַעֲבֹר, אֶת-הַיַּרְדֵּן הַזֶּה.
 

3:28
Give Joshua instructions, strengthening him and giving him courage, since he will be the one to lead these people across, and he will parcel out to them the land that you will see.’
Vetsav et-Yehoshua vechazkehu ve’amtsehu ki-hu ya’avor lifney ha’am hazeh vehu yanchil otam et-ha’arets asher tir’eh.
וְצַו אֶת-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ, וְחַזְּקֵהוּ וְאַמְּצֵהוּ: כִּי-הוּא יַעֲבֹר, לִפְנֵי הָעָם הַזֶּה, וְהוּא יַנְחִיל אוֹתָם, אֶת-הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תִּרְאֶה.
 

3:29
At that time we were staying in the valley facing Beth Peor.
Vaneshev bagay mul Beyt Pe’or.
וַנֵּשֶׁב בַּגָּיְא, מוּל בֵּית פְּעוֹר.
 

4:1
Now, Israel, listen to the rules and laws that I am teaching you to do, so that you will remain alive and come to occupy the land that God, Lord of your fathers, is giving you.
Ve’atah Yisra’el shma el-hachukim ve’el-hamishpatim asher anochi melamed etchem la’asot lema’an tichyu uvatem virishtem et-ha’arets asher Adonay Elohey avoteychem noten lachem.
וְעַתָּה יִשְׂרָאֵל, שְׁמַע אֶל-הַחֻקִּים וְאֶל-הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים, אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְלַמֵּד אֶתְכֶם, לַעֲשׂוֹת–לְמַעַן תִּחְיוּ, וּבָאתֶם וִירִשְׁתֶּם אֶת-הָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲבֹתֵיכֶם, נֹתֵן לָכֶם.
 

4:2
Do not add to the word that I am commanding you, and do not subtract from it. You must keep all the commandments of God your Lord, which I am instructing you.
Lo tosifu al-hadavar asher anochi metsaveh etchem velo tigre’u mimenu lishmor et-mitsvot Adonay Eloheychem asher anochi metsaveh etchem.
לֹא תֹסִפוּ, עַל-הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּה אֶתְכֶם, וְלֹא תִגְרְעוּ, מִמֶּנּוּ–לִשְׁמֹר, אֶת-מִצְו‍ֹת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם, אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי, מְצַוֶּה אֶתְכֶם.
 

4:3
You have see with your own eyes what God did at the Baal Peor episode. God your Lord annihilated every person among you who followed Baal Peor.
Eyneychem haro’ot et asher-asah Adonay beVa’al Pe’or ki chol-ha’ish asher halach acharey Va’al-Pe’or hishmido Adonay Eloheycha mikirbecha.
עֵינֵיכֶם, הָרֹאוֹת, אֵת אֲשֶׁר-עָשָׂה יְהוָה, בְּבַעַל פְּעוֹר: כִּי כָל-הָאִישׁ, אֲשֶׁר הָלַךְ אַחֲרֵי בַעַל-פְּעוֹר–הִשְׁמִידוֹ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ, מִקִּרְבֶּךָ.
 

4:4
Only you, the ones who remained attached to God your Lord, are all alive today.
Ve’atem hadevekim b’Adonay Eloheychem chayim kulchem hayom.
וְאַתֶּם, הַדְּבֵקִים, בַּיהוָה, אֱלֹהֵיכֶם–חַיִּים כֻּלְּכֶם, הַיּוֹם.
