Ki Thisa (כִּי תִשָּׂא)

Exodus 30:11 – 34:35

First Aliyah

30:11
God spoke to Moses saying:
Vayedaber Adonay el-Moshe lemor.

30:12
When you take a census of the Israelites to determine their numbers, each one shall be counted by giving an atonement offering for his life. In this manner, they will not be stricken by the plague when they are counted.
Ki tisa et-rosh beney-Yisra’el lifkudeyhem venatnu ish kofer nafsho l’Adonay bifkod otam velo-yihyeh vahem negef bifkod otam.

30:13
Everyone included in the census must give a half shekel. This shall be by the sanctuary standard, where a shekel is 20 gerahs. It is half of such a shekel that must be given as an offering to God.
Zeh yitnu kol-ha’over al-hapkudim machatsit hashekel beshekel hakodesh esrim gerah hashekel machatsit hashekel trumah l’Adonay.

30:14
Every man over 20 years old shall be included in this census and give this offering to God.
Kol ha’over al-hapkudim miben esrim shanah vamalah yiten trumat Adonay.

30:15
The rich may not give more, and the poor may not give less than this half shekel. It is an offering to God to atone for your lives.
He’ashir lo-yarbeh vehadal lo yam’it mimachatsit hashakel latet et-trumat Adonay lechaper al-nafshoteychem.

30:16
You will take this atonement money from the Israelites and use it for making the Communion Tent. It will thus be a remembrance for the Israelites before God to atone for your lives.
Velakachta et-kesef hakipurim me’et beney Yisra’el venatata oto al-avodat Ohel Mo’ed vehayah livney Yisra’el lezikaron lifney Adonay lechaper al-nafshoteychem.

30:17
God spoke to Moses saying:
Vayedaber Adonay el-Moshe lemor.

30:18
Make a copper washstand along with a copper base for it. Place it between the altar and the Communion Tent, and fill it with water for washing.
Ve’asita kiyor nechoshet vechano nechoshet lerachtsah venatata oto beyn-Ohel Mo’ed uveyn hamizbe’ach venatata shamah mayim.

30:19
Aaron and his sons must was their hands and feet from [this washstand].
Verachatsu Aharon uvanav mimenu et-yedeyhem ve’et-ragleyhem.

30:20
If they are not to die, they must wash with the water [of this washstand] before entering the Communion Tent or approaching the altar to perform the divine service, presenting a fire offering to God.
Bevo’am el-Ohel Mo’ed yirchatsu-mayim velo yamutu o vegishtam el-hamizbe’ach lesharet lehaktir isheh l’Adonay.

30:21
If they are not to deserve death, they must first wash their hands and feet. This shall be for [Aaron] and his descendants a law for all time, for all generations.
Verachatsu yedeyhem veragleyhem velo yamutu vehayetah lahem chok-olam lo ulezar’o ledorotam.

30:22
God spoke to Moses, saying:
Vayedaber Adonay el-Moshe lemor.

30:23
You must take the finest fragrances, 500 [shekels] of distilled myrrh, [two] half portions, each consisting of 250 [shekels] of fragrant cinnamon and 250 [shekels] of fragrant cane,
Ve’atah kach-lecha besamim rosh mor-deror chamesh me’ot vekinmon-besem machtsito chamishim umatayim ukneh-vosem chamishim umatayim.

30:24
and 500 shekels of cassia, all measured by the sanctuary standard, along with a gallon of olive oil.
Vekidah chamesh me’ot beshekel hakodesh veshemen zayit hin.

30:25
Make it into sacred anointing oil. It shall be a blended compound, as made by a skilled perfumer, [made especially for] the sacred anointing oil.
Ve’asita oto shemen mischat-kodesh rokach mirkachat ma’aseh roke’ach shemen mishchat-kodesh yihyeh.

30:26
Then use it to anoint the Communion Tent, the Ark of Testimony,
Umashachta-vo et-Ohel Mo’ed ve’et Aron ha’Edut.

30:28
the sacrificial altar and all its utensils, the washstand and its base.
Ve’et-mizbach ha’olah ve’et-kol-kelav ve’et-hakiyor ve’et-kano.

30:29
You will thus sanctify them, making them holy of holies, so that anything touching them becomes sanctified.
Vekidashta otam vehayu kodesh kodashim kol-hanogea bahem yikdash.

30:30
You must also anoint Aaron and his sons, sanctifying them as priests to Me.
Ve’et-Aharon ve’et-banav timshach vekidashta otam lechahen li.

30:31
Speak to the Israelites and tell them, ‘This shall be the sacred anointing oil to Me for all generations.
Ve’el-bney Yisra’el tedaber lemor shemen mishchat-kodesh yihyeh zeh li ledoroteychem.

30:32
Do not pour it on the skin of any [unauthorized] person, and do not duplicate it with a similar formula. It is holy, and it must remain sacred to you.
Al-besar adam lo yisach uvematkunto lo ta’asu kamohu kodesh hu kodesh yihyeh lachem.

30:33
If a person blends a similar formula, or places it on an unauthorized person, he shall be cut off [spiritually] from his people.
Ish asher yirkach kamohu va’asher yiten mimenu al-zar venichrat me’amav.

30:34
God said to Moses: Take fragrances such as balsam, onycha, galbanum, and pure frankincense, all of the same weight, as well as [other specified] fragrances.
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe kach-lecha samim nataf ushchelet vechelbenah samim ulevonah zakah bad bevad yihyeh.

30:35
Make [the mixture] into incense, as compounded by a master perfumer, well-blended, pure and holy.
Ve’asita otah ktoret rokach ma’aseh roke’ach memulach tahor kodesh.

30:36
Grind it very finely, and place it before the [Ark of] Testimony in the Communion Tent where I commune with you. It shall be holy of holies to you.
Veshachakta mimenah hadek venatatah mimenah lifney ha’edut be’Ohel Mo’ed asher iva’ed lecha shamah kodesh kodashim tihyeh lachem.

30:37
Do not duplicate the formula of the incense that you are making for personal use, since it must remain sacred to God.
Vehaktoret asher ta’aseh bematkuntah lo ta’asu lachem kodesh tihyeh lecha l’Adonay.

30:38
If a person makes it to enjoy its fragrance, he shall be cut off [spiritually] from his people.
Ish asher-ya’aseh chamoha lehariach bah venichrat me’amav.

31:1
God spoke to Moses, saying:
Vayedaber Adonay el-Moshe lemor.

31:2
I have selected Betzalel son of Uri son of Chur, of the tribe of Judah, by name.

I have also given him Oholiav son of Achisamakh of the tribe of Dan [as an assistant]. [Besides this], I have placed wisdom in the heart of every naturally talented person. They will thus make all that I have ordered,

31:12
God told Moses
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe lemor.

31:13
to speak to the Israelites and say to them: You must still keep My sabbaths. It is a sign between Me and you for all generations, to make you realize that I, God, am making you holy.
Ve’atah daber el-beney Yisra’el lemor ach et-shabtotay tishmoru ki ot hi beyni uveyneychem ledoroteychem lada’at ki ani Adonay mekadishchem.

31:14
[Therefore] keep the Sabbath as something sacred to you. Anyone doing work [on the Sabbath] shall be cut off spiritually from his people, and therefore, anyone violating it shall be put to death.

31:15
Do your work during the six week days, but keep Saturday as a Sabbath of sabbaths, holy to God. Whoever does any work on Saturday shall be put to death.

31:16
The Israelites shall thus keep the Sabbath, making it a day of rest for all generations, as an eternal covenant.

31:17
It is a sign between Me and the Israelites that during the six weekdays God made heaven and earth, but on Saturday, He ceased working and withdrew to the spiritual.
Beyni uveyn beney Yisra’el ot hi le’olam ki sheshet yamim asah Adonay et-hashamayim ve’et-ha’arets uvayom hashvi’i shavat vayinafash.
