Haftara BeHar

Jeremiah 32:6-27

Jeremiah said: God’s word came to me:

Behold Chanamel, son of Shallum your uncle, shall come to you, saying: “Buy my field that is in Anathoth, for the right of redemption is yours to buy it.” So Chanamel, son of Shallum, my uncle’s son, came to me in the court of the guard, according to God’s word, and said to me: “Buy my field, please, that is in Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is yours; and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.” Then I knew it was God’s word.

And I bought the field that was in Anathoth from Chanamel my uncle’s son, and weighed out the money to him, seventeen shekels of silver. I signed the deed, sealed it, called witnesses, and weighed the money on the balances.

Then I took the deed of purchase, both that which was sealed, containing the terms and conditions and the open copy. I delivered the deed of purchase to Baruch, the son of Neriah, the son of Machseiah, in the presence of Chanamel, my uncle’s son, in the presence of the witnesses who signed the purchase, and in the presence of all the Jews who sat in the court of the guard. I charged Baruch before them saying:

“Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, this deed of purchase, both that which is sealed, and this open deed, and put them in an earthen vessel that they may last for a long time. For thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall be bought again in this land.”

After I delivered the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed to God saying:

Ah! God, Lord! Behold, You have made the heaven and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You, who shows mercy to thousands, and recompenses the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them; the great and mighty God, the Lord of hosts in His name; great in counsel, and mighty in deed; whose eyes are open to all the ways the sons of men, giving every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of their doings; who showed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt,, and to this day in Israel, and among mankind, and made You a name as it is today;

And brought Your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, whit wonders, with a strong hand and outstretched arm, and with great terror. You gave them this land, which You swore to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey. They came in, and possessed it, but they did not listen to Your voice, or walk in your law. They did nothing of that You commanded themĀ  to do. Therefore, You sent them all this evil upon them, See the siege mounds have come into the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of the sword, and the famine and pestilence. What You have spoken has happened; and behold You see it. Yet You said to me, O God Lord: Buy the field for money; and called witnessed; throughout the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

Then God’s word came to Jeremiah, saying:

Behold, I am God, the Lord of all flesh. Is there is nothing too difficult for me?
