Amos 9.7-15
[Ashkenazim]
Are you not as Ethiopians to Me, O children of Israel? says God. Didn’t I bring up Israel from the land of Egypt, and the Phillistines from Caphtor, and Aram from Kir?
Behold, the eyes of God the Lord are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth; only I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, says God.
For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet the least grain shall not fall upon the earth. All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword; those who say: “The evil shall not overtake or confront us.”
In that day I will rise up the fallen tabernacle of David, and repair its breaches. I will rise up his ruins and build it as in days of old, so that they may posses the remnant of Edom, and all the nations upon whom My name is called, says God who does this.
Behold, the days are coming, says God, when the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes, the one who sows seed. The mountains shall drip sweet wine, and all the hills melt. And I will return the captivity of My people Israel. They shall rebuild the desolate cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine; and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit. And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall never again be plucked up from their land which I have given them, says God your Lord.
Ezekiel 20.2-20
[Sephardim]
Then God’s word came to me, saying: Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel, and say to them: This is what God the Lord says: Have you come to inquire of Me? As I live, says God the Lord, I will not have you inquire of Me. Will you judge them, son of man; will you judge them? Tell them of the abominations of their fathers; And say to them: This is what God the Lord says: On the day when I choose Israel, and lifted them up My hand to the descendants of the house of Jacob, and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt; when I lifted up My hand to them; saying: I am God your Lord; on that day I lifted up My hand to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, the choicest of all lands.
Then I said to them: Every man shall get rid of the abominations of his eyes. Do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am God your Lord. But they rebelled against Me, and would not listen to Me; every man did not get rid of the abominations of his eyes; nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out My fury on them and spread My anger on them while they were still in the land of Egypt.
But I acted for My name’s sake that it should not be profaned in front of the nations, among whom they sojourned, in whose sight I had revealed Myself to them, in bringing them out of the land of Egypt. So I took them out of the land of Egypt, and brought them into the wilderness. I gave them My statutes, and taught them My ordinances, which if a man does, he shall live by them. I also gave them My Sabbaths, as a sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am God who sanctifies them.
But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness; they did not walk in My statutes and rejected My ordinances, which if a man does, he will live by them; and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned. Then I said I would pour out My fury on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them.
But I acted for My name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in front of the nations; in whose sight I brought them out, However, I also lifted up My hand to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, one flowing with milk and honey, the choicest of all lands; Because they rejected My ordinances, and did not walk in My statutes, and profaned My Sabbaths – for their hearts went after idols. Nevertheless, My eyes spared them and I did not destroy them or finish them off in the wilderness.
Then I said to their children in the wilderness: Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, nor observe their ordinances, nor defile yourselves with their idols; I am God your Lord. Walk in My statutes, keep My ordinances; and hallow My Sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that you may know I am God your Lord.
