Blessing for Putting up a Mezuzah
Baruch ata Adonai elohaynu melech ha’olam asher kidshanu bemitzvotav vetzivanu likboah mezuzah.
Praised are you, Adonai our G-d, Sovereign of the Universe, who has made us holy with Mitzvot and instructed us to affix the Mezuzah.
Steps to Put Up A Mezuzah
-
Roll up the parchment from end to beginning so that the word “Shema” is on top.
-
Place it in the Mezuzah case.
-
Say the blessing.
-
Place the Mezuzah on the doorpost and secure it in place. Ashkenazic custom is to place the Mezuzah at a slight angle (about 45 degrees or less) to the left, with the top facing in to the room. The Sefardic custom is to place the Mezuzah vertically.
Note: Mezuzah scrolls should be checked about every three or so by a qualified Sofer. Check with your local Rabbi as to the customs in your community.
