Putting up a Mezuzah

Blessing for Putting up a Mezuzah

Blessing for the mezuzah

Baruch ata Adonai elohaynu melech ha’olam asher kidshanu bemitzvotav vetzivanu likboah mezuzah.

Praised are you, Adonai our G-d, Sovereign of the Universe, who has made us holy with Mitzvot and instructed us to affix the Mezuzah.

Steps to Put Up A Mezuzah

  1. Roll up the parchment from end to beginning so that the word “Shema” is on top.

  2. Place it in the Mezuzah case.

  3. Say the blessing.

  4. Place the Mezuzah on the doorpost and secure it in place. Ashkenazic custom is to place the Mezuzah at a slight angle (about 45 degrees or less) to the left, with the top facing in to the room. The Sefardic custom is to place the Mezuzah vertically.

Note: Mezuzah scrolls should be checked about every three or so by a qualified Sofer. Check with your local Rabbi as to the customs in your community.
