Sixth Aliyah
9:18
The sons of Noah who emerged from the ark were Shem, Ham and Yefeth. Ham was the father of Canaan.
Vayihyu veney-Noach hayotse’im min-hatevah Shem veCham vaYafet veCham hu avi Chena’an.
וַיִּהְיוּ בְנֵי-נֹחַ, הַיֹּצְאִים מִן-הַתֵּבָה–שֵׁם, וְחָם וָיָפֶת; וְחָם, הוּא אֲבִי כְנָעַן.
9:19
These three were Noah’s sons, and from them, the whole world was repopulated.
Shloshah eleh beney-Noach ume’eleh naftsah chol-ha’arets.
שְׁלֹשָׁה אֵלֶּה, בְּנֵי-נֹחַ; וּמֵאֵלֶּה, נָפְצָה כָל-הָאָרֶץ.
9:20
Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard.
Vayachel Noach ish ha’adamah vayita karem.
וַיָּחֶל נֹחַ, אִישׁ הָאֲדָמָה; וַיִּטַּע, כָּרֶם.
9:21
He drank some of the wine, making himself drunk, and uncovered himself in the tent.
Vayesht min-hayayin vayishkar vayitgal betoch aholoh.
וַיֵּשְׁתְּ מִן-הַיַּיִן, וַיִּשְׁכָּר; וַיִּתְגַּל, בְּתוֹךְ אָהֳלֹה.
9:22
Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked, and he told it to his two brothers outside.
Vayar Cham avi Chena’an et ervat aviv vayaged lishney-echav bachuts.
וַיַּרְא, חָם אֲבִי כְנַעַן, אֵת, עֶרְוַת אָבִיו; וַיַּגֵּד לִשְׁנֵי-אֶחָיו, בַּחוּץ.
9:23
Shem and Yefeth took a cloak and placed it on both their shoulders. Walking backwards, they then covered their father’s nakedness. They faced away from him and did not see their father naked.
Vayikach Shem vaYefet et-hasimlah vayasimu al-shchem shneyhem vayelchu achoranit vayechasu et ervat avihem ufneyhem achoranit ve’ervat avihem lo ra’u.
וַיִּקַּח שֵׁם וָיֶפֶת אֶת-הַשִּׂמְלָה, וַיָּשִׂימוּ עַל-שְׁכֶם שְׁנֵיהֶם, וַיֵּלְכוּ אֲחֹרַנִּית, וַיְכַסּוּ אֵת עֶרְוַת אֲבִיהֶם; וּפְנֵיהֶם, אֲחֹרַנִּית, וְעֶרְוַת אֲבִיהֶם, לֹא רָאוּ.
9:24
Noah awoke from his wine-induced sleep, and he realized what his youngest son had done to him.
Vayikets Noach miyeno vayeda et asher-asah lo beno hakatan.
וַיִּיקֶץ נֹחַ, מִיֵּינוֹ; וַיֵּדַע, אֵת אֲשֶׁר-עָשָׂה לוֹ בְּנוֹ הַקָּטָן.
9:25
He said, ‘Cursed is Canaan! He shall be a slave’s slave to his brothers!’
Vayomer arur Kena’an eved avadim yihyeh le’echav.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אָרוּר כְּנָעַן: עֶבֶד עֲבָדִים, יִהְיֶה לְאֶחָיו.
9:26
He then said, ‘Blessed be God, the Lord of Shem! Canaan shall be his slave!
Vayomer baruch Adonay Elohey Shem viyihi Chena’an eved lamo.
וַיֹּאמֶר, בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי שֵׁם; וִיהִי כְנַעַן, עֶבֶד לָמוֹ.
9:27
May God expand Yefeth, but may He dwell in the tents of Shem. Let Canaan be their slave!’
Yaft Elohim leYefet veyishkon be’aholey-Shem viyihi Chena’an eved lamo.
יַפְתְּ אֱלֹהִים לְיֶפֶת, וְיִשְׁכֹּן בְּאָהֳלֵי-שֵׁם; וִיהִי כְנַעַן, עֶבֶד לָמוֹ.
9:28
Noah lived 350 years after the flood.
Vayechi Noach achar hamabul shlosh me’ot shanah vachamishim shanah.
וַיְחִי-נֹחַ, אַחַר הַמַּבּוּל, שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה, וַחֲמִשִּׁים שָׁנָה.
9:29
All of Noah’s days were 950 years, and he died.
Vayehi kol-yemey-Noach tsha me’ot shanah vachamishim shanah vayamot.
וַיִּהְיוּ, כָּל-יְמֵי-נֹחַ, תְּשַׁע מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה, וַחֲמִשִּׁים שָׁנָה; וַיָּמֹת.
10:1
These are the chronicles of Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham and Yefeth. Children were born to them after the flood.
Ve’eleh toldot beney Noach Shem Cham vaYafet vayivaledu lahem banim achar hamabul.
וְאֵלֶּה תּוֹלְדֹת בְּנֵי-נֹחַ, שֵׁם חָם וָיָפֶת; וַיִּוָּלְדוּ לָהֶם בָּנִים, אַחַר הַמַּבּוּל.
10:2
The sons of Yefeth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Yavan, Tuval, Meshekh, and Tiras.
Beney Yefet Gomer uMagog uMaday veYavan veTuval uMeshech veTiras.
בְּנֵי יֶפֶת–גֹּמֶר וּמָגוֹג, וּמָדַי וְיָוָן וְתֻבָל; וּמֶשֶׁךְ, וְתִירָס.
10:3
The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.
Uveney Gomer Ashkenaz veRifat veTogarmah.
וּבְנֵי, גֹּמֶר–אַשְׁכְּנַז וְרִיפַת, וְתֹגַרְמָה.
10:4
The sons of Yavan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
Uveney Yavan Elisha veTarshish Kitim veDodanim.
וּבְנֵי יָוָן, אֱלִישָׁה וְתַרְשִׁישׁ, כִּתִּים, וְדֹדָנִים.
10:5
From these the isolated nations branched out into their lands. Each had its own language for its families in its nations.
Me’eleh niferedu iyey hagoyim be’artsotam ish lileshono lemishpechotam begoyehem.
מֵאֵלֶּה נִפְרְדוּ אִיֵּי הַגּוֹיִם, בְּאַרְצֹתָם, אִישׁ, לִלְשֹׁנוֹ–לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם, בְּגוֹיֵהֶם.
10:6
The sons of Ham were Cush, Mitzraim, Put, and Canaan.
Uveney Cham Kush uMitsrayim uFut uChena’an.
וּבְנֵי, חָם–כּוּשׁ וּמִצְרַיִם, וּפוּט וּכְנָעַן.
10:7
The sons of Cush were S’bha, Havila, Sabhta, Raamah and Sabht’ka. The sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.
Uveney Chush Seva vaChavilah veSavta veRamah veSavtecha uvney Ramah Shva uDedan.
וּבְנֵי כוּשׁ–סְבָא וַחֲוִילָה, וְסַבְתָּה וְרַעְמָה וְסַבְתְּכָא; וּבְנֵי רַעְמָה, שְׁבָא וּדְדָן.
10:8
Cush was the father of Nimrod, who was the first to amass power in the world.
VeChush yalad et-Nimrod hu hechel lihyot gibor ba’arets.
וְכוּשׁ, יָלַד אֶת-נִמְרֹד; הוּא הֵחֵל, לִהְיוֹת גִּבֹּר בָּאָרֶץ.
10:9
He was a mighty hunter before God. There is thus a saying, ‘Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before God!’
Hu-hayah gibor-tsa’id lifney Adonay al-ken ye’amar keNimrod gibor tsa’id lifney Adonay.
הוּא-הָיָה גִבֹּר-צַיִד, לִפְנֵי יְהוָה; עַל-כֵּן, יֵאָמַר, כְּנִמְרֹד גִּבּוֹר צַיִד, לִפְנֵי יְהוָה.
10:10
The beginning of his kingdom was Babylon, along with Erekh, Akkad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
Vatehi reshit mamlachto Bavel ve’Erech ve’Akad veChalneh be’erets Shin’ar.
וַתְּהִי רֵאשִׁית מַמְלַכְתּוֹ בָּבֶל, וְאֶרֶךְ וְאַכַּד וְכַלְנֵה, בְּאֶרֶץ, שִׁנְעָר.
10:11
Asshur left that land, and he built Nineveh, Rechovoth Ir and Calach,
Min-ha’arets hahi yatsa Ashur vayiven et-Nineveh ve’et-Rechovot ir ve’et-Kalach.
מִן-הָאָרֶץ הַהִוא, יָצָא אַשּׁוּר; וַיִּבֶן, אֶת-נִינְוֵה, וְאֶת-רְחֹבֹת עִיר, וְאֶת-כָּלַח.
10:12
as well as Resen, between Nineveh and Calach. Nineveh is a great city.
Ve’et-Resen beyn Nineveh uveyn Kalach hi ha’ir hagdolah.
וְאֶת-רֶסֶן, בֵּין נִינְוֵה וּבֵין כָּלַח–הִוא, הָעִיר הַגְּדֹלָה.
10:13
Mitzraim fathered the Ludim, the Anamim, the Lehabhim, the Naftuchim,
UMitsrayim yalad et-Ludim ve’et-Anamim ve’et-Lehavim ve’et-Naftuchim.
וּמִצְרַיִם יָלַד אֶת-לוּדִים וְאֶת-עֲנָמִים, וְאֶת-לְהָבִים–וְאֶת-נַפְתֻּחִים.
10:14
and the Pathrusim and the Casluchim (from whom the Philistines descended) and the Caphtorim.
Ve’et-Patrusim ve’et-Kasluchim asher yatse’u misham Plishtim ve’et Kaftorim.
וְאֶת-פַּתְרֻסִים וְאֶת-כַּסְלֻחִים, אֲשֶׁר יָצְאוּ מִשָּׁם פְּלִשְׁתִּים–וְאֶת-כַּפְתֹּרִים.
10:15
Canaan fathered Sidon (his firstborn) and Heth,
UChena’an yalad et-Tsidon bechoro ve’et-Chet,
וּכְנַעַן, יָלַד אֶת-צִידֹן בְּכֹרוֹ–וְאֶת-חֵת.
10:16
as well as the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites,
Ve’et-haYevusi ve’et-ha’Emori ve’et-haGirgashi.
וְאֶת-הַיְבוּסִי, וְאֶת-הָאֱמֹרִי, וְאֵת, הַגִּרְגָּשִׁי.
10:17
the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites,
Ve’et-haChivi ve’et-ha’Arki ve’et-haSini.
וְאֶת-הַחִוִּי וְאֶת-הַעַרְקִי, וְאֶת-הַסִּינִי.
10:18
the Arvadites, the Tzemarites, and the Chamathites. Later the families of the Canaanites became scattered.
Ve’et-ha’Arvadi ve’et-haTsmari ve’et-haChamati ve’achar nafotsu mishpechot haKna’ani.
וְאֶת-הָאַרְוָדִי וְאֶת-הַצְּמָרִי, וְאֶת-הַחֲמָתִי; וְאַחַר נָפֹצוּ, מִשְׁפְּחוֹת הַכְּנַעֲנִי.
10:19
The Canaanite borders extended from Sidon toward Gerar until Gaza, and toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Tzevoyim, until Lasha.
Vayehi gvul haKna’ani miTsidon boachah Gerarah ad-Azah boachah Sedomah va’Amorah ve’Admah uTsvo’im ad-Lasha.
וַיְהִי גְּבוּל הַכְּנַעֲנִי, מִצִּידֹן–בֹּאֲכָה גְרָרָה, עַד-עַזָּה: בֹּאֲכָה סְדֹמָה וַעֲמֹרָה, וְאַדְמָה וּצְבֹיִם–עַד-לָשַׁע.
10:20
These are the descendants of Ham, according to their families and languages, by their lands and nations.
Eleh veney-Cham lemishpechotam lileshonotam be’artsotam begoyehem.
אֵלֶּה בְנֵי-חָם, לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לִלְשֹׁנֹתָם, בְּאַרְצֹתָם, בְּגוֹיֵהֶם.
10:21
Sons were also born to Shem. He was the ancestor of the Hebrews, [and] the brother of Yefeth, the eldest.
UleShem yulad gam-hu avi kol-beney-Ever achi Yefet hagadol.
וּלְשֵׁם יֻלַּד, גַּם-הוּא: אֲבִי, כָּל-בְּנֵי-עֵבֶר–אֲחִי, יֶפֶת הַגָּדוֹל.
10:22
The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram.
Beney Shem Eylam ve’Ashur ve’Arpachshad veLud va’Aram.
בְּנֵי שֵׁם, עֵילָם וְאַשּׁוּר, וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁד, וְלוּד וַאֲרָם.
10:23
The sons of Aram were Utz, Chul, Gether, and Mash.
Uveney Aram Uts veChul veGeter vaMash.
וּבְנֵי, אֲרָם–עוּץ וְחוּל, וְגֶתֶר וָמַשׁ.
10:24
Arpachshad had a son Shelach. Shelach had a son Eber.
Ve’Arpachshad yalad et-Shalach veShelach yalad et-Ever.
וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁד, יָלַד אֶת-שָׁלַח; וְשֶׁלַח, יָלַד אֶת-עֵבֶר.
10:25
Eber had two sons. The name of the first was Peleg, because the world became divided in his days. His brother’s name was Yoktan.
Ule-Ever yulad sheney vanim shem ha’echad Peleg ki veyamav niflegah ha’arets veshem achiv Yoktan.
וּלְעֵבֶר יֻלַּד, שְׁנֵי בָנִים: שֵׁם הָאֶחָד פֶּלֶג, כִּי בְיָמָיו נִפְלְגָה הָאָרֶץ, וְשֵׁם אָחִיו, יָקְטָן.
10:26
Yoktan was the father of Almodad, Shelef, Chatzarmaveth, Yerach,
VeYoktan yalad et-Almodad ve’et-Shalef ve’et-Chatsarmavet ve’et-Yarach.
וְיָקְטָן יָלַד, אֶת-אַלְמוֹדָד וְאֶת-שָׁלֶף, וְאֶת-חֲצַרְמָוֶת, וְאֶת-יָרַח.
10:27
Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
Ve’et-Hadoram ve’et-Uzal ve’et-Diklah.
וְאֶת-הֲדוֹרָם וְאֶת-אוּזָל, וְאֶת-דִּקְלָה.
10:28
Obhal, Abhimael, Sh’bha,
Ve’et-Oval ve’et-Avima’el ve’et-Sheva.
וְאֶת-עוֹבָל וְאֶת-אֲבִימָאֵל, וְאֶת-שְׁבָא.
10:29
Ophir, Havilah, and Yovav. All these were the sons of Yoktan.
Ve’et Ofir ve’et-Chavilah ve’et-Yovav kol-eleh beney Yoktan.
וְאֶת-אוֹפִר וְאֶת-חֲוִילָה, וְאֶת-יוֹבָב; כָּל-אֵלֶּה, בְּנֵי יָקְטָן.
10:30
Their settlements extended from Meshah toward Sepher, the eastern mountain.
Vayehi moshavam miMesha boachah Sfarah har hakedem.
וַיְהִי מוֹשָׁבָם, מִמֵּשָׁא, בֹּאֲכָה סְפָרָה, הַר הַקֶּדֶם.
10:31
These are the descendants of Shem, according to their families and languages, by their lands and nations.
Eleh veney-Shem lemishpechotam lileshonotam be’artsotam legoyehem.
אֵלֶּה בְנֵי-שֵׁם, לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לִלְשֹׁנֹתָם, בְּאַרְצֹתָם, לְגוֹיֵהֶם.
10:32
Such were the families of Noah’s sons, according to their chronicles in their nations. From these, the nations spread over the earth after the flood.
Eleh mishpechot beney-Noach letoldotam begoyehem ume’eleh nifredu hagoyim ba’arets achar hamabul.
אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת בְּנֵי-נֹחַ לְתוֹלְדֹתָם, בְּגוֹיֵהֶם; וּמֵאֵלֶּה נִפְרְדוּ הַגּוֹיִם, בָּאָרֶץ–אַחַר הַמַּבּוּל.
