11:1
The entire earth had one language with uniform words.
Vayehi chol-ha’arets safah echat udevarim achadim.
וַיְהִי כָל-הָאָרֶץ, שָׂפָה אֶחָת, וּדְבָרִים, אֲחָדִים.

11:2
When the people migrated from the east, they found a valley in the land of Shinar, and they settled there.
Vayehi benos’am mikedem vayimtse’u vik’ah be’erets Shin’ar vayeshvu sham.
וַיְהִי, בְּנָסְעָם מִקֶּדֶם; וַיִּמְצְאוּ בִקְעָה בְּאֶרֶץ שִׁנְעָר, וַיֵּשְׁבוּ שָׁם.

11:3
They said to one another, ‘Come, let us mold bricks and fire them.’ They then had bricks to use as stone, and asphalt for mortar.
Vayomeru ish el-re’ehu havah nilbenah levenim venisrefah lisrefah vatehi lahem halvenah le’aven vehachemar hayah lahem lachomer.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל-רֵעֵהוּ, הָבָה נִלְבְּנָה לְבֵנִים, וְנִשְׂרְפָה, לִשְׂרֵפָה; וַתְּהִי לָהֶם הַלְּבֵנָה, לְאָבֶן, וְהַחֵמָר, הָיָה לָהֶם לַחֹמֶר.

11:4
They said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top shall reach the sky. Let us make ourselves a name, so that we will not be scattered all over the face of the earth.’
Vayomeru havah nivneh-lanu ir umigdal verosho bashamayim vena’aseh-lanu shem pen-nafuts al-peney kol-ha’arets.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ הָבָה נִבְנֶה-לָּנוּ עִיר, וּמִגְדָּל וְרֹאשׁוֹ בַשָּׁמַיִם, וְנַעֲשֶׂה-לָּנוּ, שֵׁם: פֶּן-נָפוּץ, עַל-פְּנֵי כָל-הָאָרֶץ.

11:5
God descended to see the city and the tower that the sons of man had built.
Vayered Adonay lir’ot et-ha’ir ve’et-hamigdal asher banu beney ha’adam.
וַיֵּרֶד יְהוָה, לִרְאֹת אֶת-הָעִיר וְאֶת-הַמִּגְדָּל, אֲשֶׁר בָּנוּ, בְּנֵי הָאָדָם.

11:6
God said, ‘They are a single people, all having one language, and this is the first thing they do! Now nothing they plan to do will be unattainable for them!
Vayomer Adonay hen am echad vesafah achat lechulam vezeh hachilam la’asot ve’atah lo-yibatser mehem kol asher yazmu la’asot.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה, הֵן עַם אֶחָד וְשָׂפָה אַחַת לְכֻלָּם, וְזֶה, הַחִלָּם לַעֲשׂוֹת; וְעַתָּה לֹא-יִבָּצֵר מֵהֶם, כֹּל אֲשֶׁר יָזְמוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת.

11:7
Come, let us descend and confuse their speech, so that one person will not understand another’s speech.’
Havah nerdah venavlah sham sefatam asher lo yishme’u ish sfat re’ehu.
הָבָה, נֵרְדָה, וְנָבְלָה שָׁם, שְׂפָתָם–אֲשֶׁר לֹא יִשְׁמְעוּ, אִישׁ שְׂפַת רֵעֵהוּ.

11:8
From that place, God scattered them all over the face of the earth, and they stopped building the city.
Vayafets Adonay otam misham al-peney chol-ha’arets vayachdelu livnot ha’ir.
וַיָּפֶץ יְהוָה אֹתָם מִשָּׁם, עַל-פְּנֵי כָל-הָאָרֶץ; וַיַּחְדְּלוּ, לִבְנֹת הָעִיר.

11:9
e named it Babel, because this was the place where God confused the world’s language. It was from there that God dispersed [humanity] over all the face of the earth.
Al-ken kara shemah Bavel ki-sham balal Adonay sfat kol-ha’arets umisham hefitsam Adonay al-peney kol-ha’arets.
עַל-כֵּן קָרָא שְׁמָהּ, בָּבֶל, כִּי-שָׁם בָּלַל יְהוָה, שְׂפַת כָּל-הָאָרֶץ; וּמִשָּׁם הֱפִיצָם יְהוָה, עַל-פְּנֵי כָּל-הָאָרֶץ.

11:10
These are the chronicles of Shem: Shem was 100 years old when he had a son Arpachshad, two years after the flood.
Eleh toldot Shem Shem ben-me’at shanah vayoled et-Arpachshad shnatayim achar hamabul.
אֵלֶּה, תּוֹלְדֹת שֵׁם–שֵׁם בֶּן-מְאַת שָׁנָה, וַיּוֹלֶד אֶת-אַרְפַּכְשָׁד: שְׁנָתַיִם, אַחַר הַמַּבּוּל.

11:11
Shem lived 500 years after he had Arpachshad, and he had sons and daughters.
Veyechi-Shem acharey holido et-Arpachshad chamesh me’ot shanah vayoled banim uvanot.
וַיְחִי-שֵׁם, אַחֲרֵי הוֹלִידוֹ אֶת-אַרְפַּכְשָׁד, חֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת, שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד בָּנִים, וּבָנוֹת.

11:12
Arpachshad was 35 years old when he had a son Shelach.
Ve’Arpachshad chay chamesh ushloshim shanah vayoled et-Shalach.
וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁד חַי, חָמֵשׁ וּשְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד, אֶת-שָׁלַח.

11:13
Arpachshad lived 403 years after he had Shelach, and he had sons and daughters.
Vayechi Arpachshad acharey holido et-Shelach shalosh shanim ve’arba me’ot shanah vayoled banim uvanot.
וַיְחִי אַרְפַּכְשַׁד, אַחֲרֵי הוֹלִידוֹ אֶת-שֶׁלַח, שָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנִים, וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד בָּנִים, וּבָנוֹת.

11:14
Shelach was 30 years old when he had a son Eber.
VeShelach chay shloshim shanah vayoled et-Ever.
וְשֶׁלַח חַי, שְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד, אֶת-עֵבֶר.

11:15
Shelach lived 403 years after he had Eber, and he had sons and daughters.
Vayechi-Shelach acharey holido et-Ever shalosh shanim ve’arba me’ot shanah vayoled banim uvanot.
וַיְחִי-שֶׁלַח, אַחֲרֵי הוֹלִידוֹ אֶת-עֵבֶר, שָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנִים, וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד בָּנִים, וּבָנוֹת.

11:16
Eber was 34 years old when he had a son Peleg.
Vayechi Ever arba ushloshim shanah vayoled et-Paleg.
וַיְחִי-עֵבֶר, אַרְבַּע וּשְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד, אֶת-פָּלֶג.

11:17
Eber lived 430 years after he had Peleg, and he had sons and daughters.
Vayechi-Ever acharey holido et-Peleg shloshim shanah ve’arba me’ot shanah vayoled banim uvanot.
וַיְחִי-עֵבֶר, אַחֲרֵי הוֹלִידוֹ אֶת-פֶּלֶג, שְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה, וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד בָּנִים, וּבָנוֹת.

11:18
Peleg was 30 years old when he had a son Reu.
Vayechi-Feleg shloshim shanah vayoled et-Re’u.
וַיְחִי-פֶלֶג, שְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד, אֶת-רְעוּ.

11:19
Peleg lived 209 years after he had Reu, and he had sons and daughters.
Vayechi-Feleg acharey holido et-Re’u tesha shanim umatayim shanah vayoled banim uvanot.
וַיְחִי-פֶלֶג, אַחֲרֵי הוֹלִידוֹ אֶת-רְעוּ, תֵּשַׁע שָׁנִים, וּמָאתַיִם שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד בָּנִים, וּבָנוֹת.

11:20
Reu was 32 years old when he had a son Serug.
Vayechi Re’u shtayim ushloshim shanah vayoled et-Srug.
וַיְחִי רְעוּ, שְׁתַּיִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד, אֶת-שְׂרוּג.

11:21
Reu lived 207 years after he had Serug, and he had sons and daughters.
Vayechi Re’u acharey holido et-Srug sheva shanim umatayim shanah vayoled banim uvanot.
וַיְחִי רְעוּ, אַחֲרֵי הוֹלִידוֹ אֶת-שְׂרוּג, שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים, וּמָאתַיִם שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד בָּנִים, וּבָנוֹת.

11:22
Serug was 30 years old when he had a son Nachor.
Vayechi Srug shloshim shanah vayoled et-Nachor.
וַיְחִי שְׂרוּג, שְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד, אֶת-נָחוֹר.

11:23
Serug lived 200 years after he had Nachor, and he had sons and daughters.
Vayechi Srug acharey holido et-Nachor matayim shanah vayoled banim uvanot.
וַיְחִי שְׂרוּג, אַחֲרֵי הוֹלִידוֹ אֶת-נָחוֹר–מָאתַיִם שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד בָּנִים, וּבָנוֹת.

11:24
Nachor was 29 years old when he had a son Terach.
Vayechi Nachor tesha ve’esrim shanah vayoled et-Tarach.
וַיְחִי נָחוֹר, תֵּשַׁע וְעֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד, אֶת-תָּרַח.

11:25
Nachor lived 119 years after he had Terach, and he had sons and daughters.
Vayechi Nachor acharey holido et-Terach tesha-esreh shanah ume’at shanah vayoled banim uvanot.
וַיְחִי נָחוֹר, אַחֲרֵי הוֹלִידוֹ אֶת-תֶּרַח, תְּשַׁע-עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה, וּמְאַת שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד בָּנִים, וּבָנוֹת.

11:26
Terach was 70 years old when he fathered Abram, Nachor and Haran.
Vayechi Terach shive’im shanah vayoled et-Avram et-Nachor ve’et-Haran.
וַיְחִי-תֶרַח, שִׁבְעִים שָׁנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד, אֶת-אַבְרָם, אֶת-נָחוֹר, וְאֶת-הָרָן.

11:27
These are the chronicles of Terach: Terach fathered Abram, Nachor and Haran. Haran had a son Lot.
Ve’eleh toldot Terach Terach holid et-Avram et-Nachor ve’et Haran veHaran holid et-Lot.
וְאֵלֶּה, תּוֹלְדֹת תֶּרַח–תֶּרַח הוֹלִיד אֶת-אַבְרָם, אֶת-נָחוֹר וְאֶת-הָרָן; וְהָרָן, הוֹלִיד אֶת-לוֹט.

11:28
Haran died during the lifetime of his father Terach, in the land of his birth, Ur Casdim.
Vayamot Haran al-peney Terach aviv be’erets moladeto beUr Kasdim.
וַיָּמָת הָרָן, עַל-פְּנֵי תֶּרַח אָבִיו, בְּאֶרֶץ מוֹלַדְתּוֹ, בְּאוּר כַּשְׂדִּים.
