Devarim Hebrew Parsha – 4th Aliyah

Devarim (דְּבָרִים)

Deuteronomy 1:1 – 3:22

Fourth Aliyah

1:39
The ones to enter the [land] will be the children whom you feared would be taken captive and your little ones who even now do not know good from bad. To them I will give [the land] and they will occupy it.
Vetapchem asher amartem lavaz yihyeh uvneychem asher lo-yad’u hayom tov vara hemah yavo’u shamah velahem etnenah vehem yirashuha.

1:40
You must now turn around and head into the desert toward the Southern Sea.’
Ve’atem penu lachem use’u hamidbarah derech Yam-Suf.

1:41
Your answer to me was, ‘We have sinned to God! We will head north and fight, just as God our Lord commanded us.’ Each of you took his weapons, and you made every effort to head north to the highlands.
Vata’anu vatomeru elay chatanu l’Adonay anachnu na’aleh venilchamnu kechol asher-tsivanu Adonay Eloheynu vatachgeru ish et-kley milchamto vatahinu la’alot haharah.

1:42
God said to me, ‘Tell them not to go and not to fight, since I will not be with them. Let them not be killed by their foes.’
Vayomer Adonay elay emor lahem lo ta’alu velo-tilachamu ki eyneni bekirbechem velo tinagefu lifney oyveychem.

1:43
I spoke to you, but you would not listen. You rebelled against God’s word, and willfully headed north to the highlands.
Va’adaber aleychem velo shmatem vatamru et-pi Adonay vatazidu vata’alu haharah.

1:44
The Amorites who lived in the highlands came out to confront you, and chased you like bees. They struck you down in Seir as far as Chormah.
Vayetse ha’Emori hayoshev bahar hahu likratchem vayirdefu etchem ka’asher ta’aseynah hadevorim vayaktu etchem beSe’ir ad-Chormah.

1:45
You came back and wept before God, but God would neither listen to you nor pay attention to you.
Vatashuvu vativku lifney Adonay velo-shama Adonay bekolechem velo he’ezin aleychem.

1:46
You remained in Kadesh Barnea for a long time, as long as you remained [in all the other places].
Vateshvu veKadesh yamim rabim kayamim asher yeshavtem.

2:1
We then turned around and headed into the desert toward the Southern Sea as God had told me. We traveled around in the Seir highlands for a long time.
Vanefen vanisa hamidbarah derech Yam-Suf ka’asher diber Adonay elay vanasov et-har-Se’ir yamim rabim.
