Lech Lecha (לֶךְ-לְךָ)

Genesis 13:5 – 13:18

Third Aliyah

13:5
Lot, who accompanied Abram, also had sheep, cattle and tents.
Vegam le-Lot haholech et-Avram hayah tson uvakar ve’ohalim.

13:6
The land could not support them living together; their wealth was so great that they could not stay together.
Velo-nasa otam ha’arets lashevet yachdav ki-hayah rechusham rav velo yachlu lashevet yachdav.

13:7
Friction developed between the herdsmen of Abram’s flocks and those of Lot. The Canaanites and Perizites were then living in the land.
Vayehi-riv beyn ro’ey mikneh-Avram uveyn ro’ey mikneh-Lot vehaKna’ani vehaPrizi az yoshev ba’arets.

13:8
Abram said to Lot, ‘Let’s not have friction between me and you, and between my herdsmen and yours. After all, we’re brothers.
Vayomer Avram el-Lot al-na tehi merivah beyni uveynecha uveyn ro’ay uveyn ro’echa ki-anashim achim anachnu.

13:9
All the land is before you. Why not separate from me? If you [go to] the left, I will go to the right; if to the right, I will take the left.’

13:10
Lot looked up and saw that the entire Jordan Plain, all the way to Tzoar had plenty of water. It was like God’s own garden, like the land of Egypt.
Vayisa-Lot et-eynav vayar et-kol-kikar haYarden ki chulah mashkeh lifney shachet Adonay et-Sedom ve’et-Amorah kegan-Adonay ke’erets Mitsrayim boachah Tso’ar.

13:11
Lot chose for himself the entire Jordan Plain. He headed eastward, and the two separated.

13:12
Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot dwelt in the cities of the Plain, having migrated as far as Sodom.
Avram yashav be’erets-Kena’an veLot yashav be’arey hakikar vaye’ehal ad-Sedom.

13:13
But the people of Sodom were very wicked, and they sinned against God.
Ve’anshey Sedom ra’im vechata’im l’Adonay me’od.

13:14
After Lot left him, God said to Abram, ‘Raise your eyes, and, from the place where you are now standing, look to the north, to the south, to the east, and to the west.
Va’Adonay amar el-Avram acharey hipared-Lot me’imo sa na eynecha ure’eh min-hamakom asher-atah sham tsafonah vanegbah vakedmah vayamah.

13:15
For all the land that you see, I will give to you and to your offspring forever.

13:16
I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth; if a man will be able to count [all] the grains of dust in the world, then your offspring also will be countable.
Vesamti et-zar’acha ka’afar ha’arets asher im-yuchal ish limenot et-afar ha’arets gam-zar’acha yimaneh.

13:17
Rise, walk the land, through its length and breadth, for I will give it all to you.’
Kum hithalech ba’arets le’orkah ulerochbah ki lecha etenenah.

13:18
Abram moved on. He came and settled in the Plains of Mamre, in Hebron, and there he built an altar to God.
Vaye’ehal Avram vayavo vayeshev be’Eloney Mamre asher beChevron vayiven-sham mizbe’ach l’Adonay.
