15:7
God said to him, ‘I am God who took you out of Ur Casdim to give you this land as a possession.’

15:8
‘O Lord, God,’ replied Abram, ‘How can I really know that it will be mine?’
Vayomar Adonay Elohim bamah eda ki irashenah.

15:9
God said to him, ‘Bring for Me a prime heifer, a prime goat, a prime ram, a dove and a young pigeon.’
Vayomer elav kecha li eglah meshuleshet ve’ez meshuleshet ve’ayl meshulash vetor vegozal.

15:10
Abram brought all these for Him. He split them in half, and placed one half opposite the other. The birds, however, he did not split.
Vayikach-lo et-kol-eleh vayevater otam batavech vayiten ish-bitro likrat re’ehu ve’et-hatsipor lo vatar.

15:11
Vultures descended on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
Vayered ha’ayit al-hapgarim vayashev otam Avram.

15:12
When the sun was setting, Abram fell into a trance, and he was stricken by a deep dark dread.
Vayehi hashemesh lavo vetardemah naflah al-Avram vehineh eymah chashechah gdolah nofelet alav.

15:13
God said to Abram, ‘Know for sure that your descendants will be foreigners in a land that is not theirs for 400 years. They will be enslaved and oppressed.
Vayomer le-Avram yadoa teda ki-ger yihyeh zar’acha be’erets lo lahem va’avadum ve’inu otam arba me’ot shanah.

15:14
But I will finally bring judgment against the nation who enslaves them, and they will then leave with great wealth.

15:15
You shall join your fathers in peace, and you will be buried at a good old age.
Ve’atah tavo el-avoteycha beshalom tikaver beseyvah tovah.

15:16
The fourth generation will return here, since the Amorite’s sin will not have run its course until then.’
Vedor revi’i yashuvu henah ki lo-shalem avon ha’Emori ad-henah.

15:17
The sun set, and it became very dark. A smoking furnace and a flaming torch passed between the halves of the animals.
Vayehi hashemesh ba’ah va’alatah hayah vehineh tanur ashan velapid esh asher avar beyn hagezarim ha’eleh.

15:18
On that day, God made a covenant with Abram, saying, ‘To your descendants I have given this land, from the Egyptian River as far as the great river, the Euphrates;
Bayom hahu karat Adonay et-Avram brit lemor lezar’acha natati et-ha’arets hazot minehar Mitsrayim ad-hanahar hagadol nehar-Perat.

15:19
the lands of the Kenites, the Kenizites, the Kadmonites,
Et-haKeyni ve’et haKenizi ve’et haKadmoni.

15:20
the Hittites, the Perizites, the Rephaim,
Ve’et-haChiti ve’et-haPrizi ve’et-haRefayim.

15:21
the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Yebusites.
Ve’et-ha’Emori ve’et-haKna’ani ve’et-haGirgashi ve’et-haYevusi.

16:1
Abram’s wife Sarai had not borne him any children. She had an Egyptian slave-girl by the name of Hagar.
VeSaray eshet Avram lo yaledah lo velah shifchah Mitsrit ushmah Hagar.

16:2
Sarai said to Abram, ‘God has kept me from having children. Come to my slave, and hopefully I will have sons through her.’ Abram heeded Sarai.
Vatomer Saray el-Avram hineh-na atsarani Adonay miledet bo-na el-shifchati ulay ibaneh mimenah vayishma Avram lekol Saray.

16:3
After Abram had lived in Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian her slave, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife.
Vatikach Saray eshet Avram et-Hagar haMitsrit shifchatah mikets eser shanim leshevet Avram be’erets Kena’an vatiten otah le-Avram ishah lo le’ishah.

16:4
Abram came to her, and she conceived. When she realized that she was pregnant, she looked at her mistress with contempt.
Vayavo el-Hagar vatahar vatere ki haratah vatekal gevirtah be’eyneyha.

16:5
Sarai said to Abram, ‘It’s all your fault! I myself placed my slave in your arms! Now that she sees herself pregnant, she looks at me with disrespect. Let God judge between me and you!’
Vatomer Saray el-Avram chamasi aleycha anochi natati shifchati becheykecha vatere ki haratah va’ekal be’eyneyha yishpot Adonay beyni uveyneycha.

16:6
Abram replied to Sarai, ‘Your slave is in your hands. Do with her as you see fit.’ Sarai abused her, and Hagar ran away from her.
Vayomer Avram el-Saray hineh shifchatech beyadech asi-lah hatov be’eynaych vate’aneha Saray vativrach mipaneyha.

16:7
An angel of God encountered her by a spring in the desert, in the oasis on the road to Shur.
Vayimtsa’ah mal’ach Adonay al-eyn hamayim bamidbar al-ha’ayin bederech Shur.

16:8
The angel said, ‘Hagar, maid of Sarai! From where are you coming, and where are you going?’ ‘I am running away from my mistress, Sarai,’ she replied.
Vayomar Hagar shifchat Saray ey-mizeh vat ve’anah telechi vatomer mipeney Saray gevirti anochi borachat.

16:9
The angel of God said to her, ‘Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her.’
Vayomer lah mal’ach Adonay shuvi el-gevirtech vehit’ani tachat yadeyha.

16:10
Another angel said in God’s name, ‘I will grant you many descendants. They will be so many that they will be uncountable.’
Vayomer lah mal’ach Adonay harbah arbeh et-zar’ech velo yisafer merov.

16:11
Still another angel of God said to her, ‘You are pregnant, and will give birth to a son. You must name him Ishmael, for God has heard your prayer.
Vayomer lah mal’ach Adonay hinach harah veyoladet ben vekarat shmo Yishma’el ki-shama Adonay el-onyech.

16:12
He will be a rebel. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand will be against him. Still, he will dwell undisturbed near all his brothers.’
Vehu yihyeh pereh adam yado vakol veyad kol bo ve’al-peney chol-echav yishkon.

16:13
Hagar gave a name to God who had spoken to her, saying, ‘You are a Vision God,’ for she said, ‘Didn’t I still see here after my vision?’
Vatikra shem-Adonay hadover eleyha atah El Ro’i ki amerah hagam halom ra’iti acharey ro’i.

16:14
She therefore named the oasis, ‘Oasis to Life my Vision’ (Be’er LaChai Ro’i). It is between Kadesh and Bered.
Al-ken kara labe’er Be’er Lachay Ro’i hineh veyn-Kadesh uveyn Bared.

16:15
Hagar bore Abram’s son. Abram gave the name Ishmael to his son, who had been born to Hagar.
Vateled Hagar le-Avram ben vayikra Avram shem-beno asher-yaledah Hagar Yishma’el.

16:16
He was 86 years old when Hagar bore his son Ishmael.
Ve’Avram ben-shmonim shanah veshesh shanim beledet-Hagar et-Yishma’el le-Avram.

17:1
Abram was 99 years old. God appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty. Walk before Me and be perfect.
Vayehi Avram ben-tish’im shanah vetesha shanim vayera Adonay el-Avram vayomer elav ani El-Shaday hithalech lefanay veheyeh tamim.

17:2
I will make a covenant between Me and you, and I will increase your numbers very much.’

17:3
Abram fell on his face. God spoke to him again, saying,
Vayipol Avram al-panav vayedaber ito Elohim lemor.

17:4
‘As far as I am concerned, here is My covenant with you: You shall be the father of a horde of nations.
Ani hineh beriti itach vehayita le’av hamon goyim.

17:5
No longer shall you be called Abram. Your name shall become Abraham, for I have set you up as the father of a horde of nations.

17:6
I will increase your numbers very, very much, and I will make you into nations – kings will be your descendants.
Vehifreti otcha bime’od me’od unetaticha legoyim umelachim mimcha yetse’u.
