Exodus 1:1 – 6:1

First Aliyah



 

1:1
These are the names of Israel’s sons who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:
Ve’eleh shemot beney Yisra’el haba’im Mitsraymah et Ya’akov ish uveyto ba’u.
וְאֵלֶּה, שְׁמוֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, הַבָּאִים, מִצְרָיְמָה: אֵת יַעֲקֹב, אִישׁ וּבֵיתוֹ בָּאוּ.
 

1:2
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
Re’uven Shim’on Levi viYehudah
רְאוּבֵן שִׁמְעוֹן, לֵוִי וִיהוּדָה.
 

1:3
Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin,
Isachar Zvulun uVinyamin.
יִשָּׂשכָר זְבוּלֻן, וּבִנְיָמִן.
 

1:4
Dan, Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
Dan veNaftali Gad ve’Asher.
דָּן וְנַפְתָּלִי, גָּד וְאָשֵׁר.
 

1:5
The [original] number of Jacob’s direct descendants, including Joseph who was in Egypt, was seventy.
Vayehi kol-nefesh yots’ey yerech-Ya’akov shiv’im nafesh veYosef hayah veMitsrayim.
וַיְהִי, כָּל-נֶפֶשׁ יֹצְאֵי יֶרֶךְ-יַעֲקֹב–שִׁבְעִים נָפֶשׁ; וְיוֹסֵף, הָיָה בְמִצְרָיִם.
 

1:6
Joseph, his brothers, and [everyone else in] that generation died.
Vayamot Yosef vechol-echav vechol hador hahu.
וַיָּמָת יוֹסֵף וְכָל-אֶחָיו, וְכֹל הַדּוֹר הַהוּא.
 

1:7
The Israelites were fertile and prolific, and their population increased. They became so numerous that the land was filled with them.
Uveney Yisra’el paru vayishretsu vayirbu vaya’atsmu bime’od me’od vatimale ha’arets otam.
וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, פָּרוּ וַיִּשְׁרְצוּ וַיִּרְבּוּ וַיַּעַצְמוּ–בִּמְאֹד מְאֹד; וַתִּמָּלֵא הָאָרֶץ, אֹתָם.
 

1:8
A new king who did not know of Joseph, came into power over Egypt.
Vayakom melech-chadash al-Mitsrayim asher lo-yada et-Yosef.
וַיָּקָם מֶלֶךְ-חָדָשׁ, עַל-מִצְרָיִם, אֲשֶׁר לֹא-יָדַע, אֶת-יוֹסֵף.
 

1:9
He announced to his people, ‘The Israelites are becoming too numerous and strong for us.
Vayomer el-amo hineh am beney Yisra’el rav ve’atsum mimenu.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אֶל-עַמּוֹ: הִנֵּה, עַם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל–רַב וְעָצוּם, מִמֶּנּוּ.
 

1:10
We must deal wisely with them. Otherwise, they may increase so much, that if there is war, they will join our enemies and fight against us, driving [us] from the land.’
Havah nitchakemah lo pen-yirbeh vehayah ki-tikrenah milchamah venosaf gam-hu al-sonenu venilcham-banu ve’alah min-ha’arets.
הָבָה נִתְחַכְּמָה, לוֹ: פֶּן-יִרְבֶּה, וְהָיָה כִּי-תִקְרֶאנָה מִלְחָמָה וְנוֹסַף גַּם-הוּא עַל-שֹׂנְאֵינוּ, וְנִלְחַם-בָּנוּ, וְעָלָה מִן-הָאָרֶץ.
 

1:11
[The Egyptians] appointed conscription officers over [the Israelites] to crush their spirits with hard labor. [The Israelites] were to build up the cities of Pithom and Ra’amses as supply centers for Pharaoh.
Vayasimu alav sarey misim lema’an anoto besivlotam vayiven arey miskenot le-Far’oh et-Pitom ve’et-Ra’amses.
וַיָּשִׂימוּ עָלָיו שָׂרֵי מִסִּים, לְמַעַן עַנֹּתוֹ בְּסִבְלֹתָם; וַיִּבֶן עָרֵי מִסְכְּנוֹת, לְפַרְעֹה–אֶת-פִּתֹם, וְאֶת-רַעַמְסֵס.
 

1:12
But the more [the Egyptians] oppressed them, the more [the Israelites] proliferated and spread. [The Egyptians] came to dread the Israelites.
Vecha’asher ye’anu oto ken yirbeh vechen yifrots vayakutsu mipeney beney Yisra’el.
וְכַאֲשֶׁר יְעַנּוּ אֹתוֹ, כֵּן יִרְבֶּה וְכֵן יִפְרֹץ; וַיָּקֻצוּ, מִפְּנֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
 

1:13
The Egyptians started to make the Israelites do labor designated to break their bodies.
Vaya’avidu Mitsrayim et-beney Yisra’el befarech.
וַיַּעֲבִדוּ מִצְרַיִם אֶת-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּפָרֶךְ.
 

1:14
They made the lives of [the Israelites] miserable with harsh labor involving mortar and bricks, as well as all kinds of work in the field. All the work they made them do was intended to break them.
Vayemareru et-chayeyhem ba’avodah kashah bechomer uvilvenim uvechol-avodah basadeh et kol-avodatam asher-avdu vahem befarech.
וַיְמָרְרוּ אֶת-חַיֵּיהֶם בַּעֲבֹדָה קָשָׁה, בְּחֹמֶר וּבִלְבֵנִים, וּבְכָל-עֲבֹדָה, בַּשָּׂדֶה–אֵת, כָּל-עֲבֹדָתָם, אֲשֶׁר-עָבְדוּ בָהֶם, בְּפָרֶךְ.
 

1:15
The king of Egypt spoke to the [chief] Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shifra and Puah.
Vayomer melech Mitsrayim lameyaldot ha’Ivriot asher shem ha’achat Shifrah veshem hashenit Puah.
וַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם, לַמְיַלְּדֹת הָעִבְרִיֹּת, אֲשֶׁר שֵׁם הָאַחַת שִׁפְרָה, וְשֵׁם הַשֵּׁנִית פּוּעָה.
 

1:16
He said, ‘When you deliver Hebrew women, you must look carefully at the birthstool. If [the infant] is a boy, kill it; but if it is a girl, let it live.’
Vayomer beyaledchen et-ha’Ivriot ur’iten al-ha’ovnayim im-ben hu vahamiten oto ve’im-bat hi vachayah.
וַיֹּאמֶר, בְּיַלֶּדְכֶן אֶת-הָעִבְרִיּוֹת, וּרְאִיתֶן, עַל-הָאָבְנָיִם: אִם-בֵּן הוּא וַהֲמִתֶּן אֹתוֹ, וְאִם-בַּת הִוא וָחָיָה.
 

1:17
The midwives feared God, and did not do as the Egyptian king had ordered them. They allowed the infant boys to live.
Vatir’ena hameyaldot et-ha’Elohim velo asu ka’asher diber aleyhen melech Mitsrayim vatechayeyna et-hayeladim.
וַתִּירֶאןָ הַמְיַלְּדֹת, אֶת-הָאֱלֹהִים, וְלֹא עָשׂוּ, כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אֲלֵיהֶן מֶלֶךְ מִצְרָיִם; וַתְּחַיֶּיןָ, אֶת-הַיְלָדִים.
