Yithro (יִתְרוֹ)

Exodus 18:1 – 20:23

First Aliyah



 

18:1
Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, sheik of Midian, heard about all that God had done for Moses and His people Israel when He brought Israel out of Egypt.
Vayishma Yitro chohen Midyan choten Moshe et kol-asher asah Elohim le-Moshe ule-Yisra’el amo ki-hotsi Adonay et-Yisra’el miMitsrayim.
וַיִּשְׁמַע יִתְרוֹ כֹהֵן מִדְיָן, חֹתֵן מֹשֶׁה, אֵת כָּל-אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה אֱלֹהִים לְמֹשֶׁה, וּלְיִשְׂרָאֵל עַמּוֹ: כִּי-הוֹצִיא יְהוָה אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל, מִמִּצְרָיִם.
 

18:2
Jethro brought along Moses’ wife, Tzipporah, who had been sent home earlier,
Vayikach Yitro choten Moshe et-Tsiporah eshet Moshe achar shilucheyha.
וַיִּקַּח, יִתְרוֹ חֹתֵן מֹשֶׁה, אֶת-צִפֹּרָה, אֵשֶׁת מֹשֶׁה–אַחַר, שִׁלּוּחֶיהָ.
 

18:3
and her two sons. The name of the [first] one was Gershom, because [Moses] had declared, ‘I was a foreigner (ger) in a strange land.’
Ve’et shney vaneyha asher shem ha’echad Gershom ki amar ger hayiti be’erets nochryah.
וְאֵת, שְׁנֵי בָנֶיהָ: אֲשֶׁר שֵׁם הָאֶחָד, גֵּרְשֹׁם–כִּי אָמַר, גֵּר הָיִיתִי בְּאֶרֶץ נָכְרִיָּה.
 

18:4
The name of the [other] one was Eliezer, because, ‘My father’s God (El) was my Helper (Ezer), rescuing me from Pharaoh’s sword.’
Veshem ha’echad Eli’ezer ki-Elohey avi be’ezri vayatsileni mecherev Par’oh.
וְשֵׁם הָאֶחָד, אֱלִיעֶזֶר–כִּי-אֱלֹהֵי אָבִי בְּעֶזְרִי, וַיַּצִּלֵנִי מֵחֶרֶב פַּרְעֹה.
 

18:5
Jethro came together with [Moses’] wife and sons to the desert, where Moses was staying, near God’s mountain.
Vayavo Yitro choten Moshe uvanav ve’ishto el-Moshe el-hamidbar asher-hu choneh sham har ha’Elohim.
וַיָּבֹא יִתְרוֹ חֹתֵן מֹשֶׁה, וּבָנָיו וְאִשְׁתּוֹ–אֶל-מֹשֶׁה: אֶל-הַמִּדְבָּר, אֲשֶׁר-הוּא חֹנֶה שָׁם–הַר הָאֱלֹהִים.
 

18:6
He sent word to Moses: ‘I, your father-in-law Jethro, am on my way to you, along with your wife. Her two sons are with her.’
Vayomer el-Moshe ani chotencha Yitro ba eleycha ve’ishtecha ushney vaneyha imah.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אֶל-מֹשֶׁה, אֲנִי חֹתֶנְךָ יִתְרוֹ, בָּא אֵלֶיךָ; וְאִשְׁתְּךָ–וּשְׁנֵי בָנֶיהָ, עִמָּהּ.
 

18:7
Moses went out to greet his father-in-law, bowing down low and kissing him. They asked about each other’s welfare and went into the tent.
Vayetse Moshe likrat chotno vayishtachu vayishak-lo vayish’alu ish-lere’ehu leshalom vayavo’u ha’ohelah.
וַיֵּצֵא מֹשֶׁה לִקְרַאת חֹתְנוֹ, וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ וַיִּשַּׁק-לוֹ, וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ אִישׁ-לְרֵעֵהוּ, לְשָׁלוֹם; וַיָּבֹאוּ, הָאֹהֱלָה.
 

18:8
Moses told his father-in-law about all that God had done to Pharaoh and Egypt for the sake of Israel, as well as all the frustrations they had encountered on the way, and [how] God had rescued them.
Vayesaper Moshe lechoteno et kol-asher asah Adonay le-Far’oh ul-Mitsrayim al odot Yisra’el et kol-hatla’ah asher metsa’atam baderech vayatsilem Adonay.
וַיְסַפֵּר מֹשֶׁה, לְחֹתְנוֹ, אֵת כָּל-אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה יְהוָה לְפַרְעֹה וּלְמִצְרַיִם, עַל אוֹדֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל: אֵת כָּל-הַתְּלָאָה אֲשֶׁר מְצָאָתַם בַּדֶּרֶךְ, וַיַּצִּלֵם יְהוָה.
 

18:9
Jethro expressed joy because of all the good that God had done for Israel, rescuing them from Egypt’s power.
Vayichad Yitro al kol-hatovah asher-asah Adonay le-Yisra’el asher hitsilo miyad Mitsrayim.
וַיִּחַדְּ יִתְרוֹ–עַל כָּל-הַטּוֹבָה, אֲשֶׁר-עָשָׂה יְהוָה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל: אֲשֶׁר הִצִּילוֹ, מִיַּד מִצְרָיִם.
 

18:10
He said, ‘Praised be God, who rescued you from the power of Egypt and Pharaoh – who liberated the people from Egypt’s power.
Vayomer Yitro baruch Adonay asher hitsil etchem miyad Mitsrayim umiyad Par’oh asher hitsil et-ha’am mitachat yad-Mitsrayim.
וַיֹּאמֶר, יִתְרוֹ, בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה, אֲשֶׁר הִצִּיל אֶתְכֶם מִיַּד מִצְרַיִם וּמִיַּד פַּרְעֹה: אֲשֶׁר הִצִּיל אֶת-הָעָם, מִתַּחַת יַד-מִצְרָיִם.
 

18:11
Now I know that God is the greatest of all deities. Through their very plots, He rose above them.’
Atah yadati ki-gadol Adonay mikol-ha’elohim ki vadavar asher zadu aleyhem.
עַתָּה יָדַעְתִּי, כִּי-גָדוֹל יְהוָה מִכָּל-הָאֱלֹהִים: כִּי בַדָּבָר, אֲשֶׁר זָדוּ עֲלֵיהֶם.
 

18:12
Jethro brought burnt offerings and [other] sacrifices to God. Aaron and all the elders of Israel came to share the meal with Moses’ father-in-law before God.
Vayikach Yitro choten Moshe olah uzvachim l’Elohim vayavo Aharon vechol zikney Yisra’el le’echol-lechem im-choten Moshe lifney ha’Elohim.
וַיִּקַּח יִתְרוֹ חֹתֵן מֹשֶׁה, עֹלָה וּזְבָחִים–לֵאלֹהִים; וַיָּבֹא אַהֲרֹן וְכֹל זִקְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, לֶאֱכָל-לֶחֶם עִם-חֹתֵן מֹשֶׁה–לִפְנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים.
