Yithro (יִתְרוֹ)

Exodus 18:1 – 20:23

Sixth Aliyah

19:20
God came down on Mount Sinai, to the peak of the mountain. He summoned Moses to the mountain peak, and Moses climbed up.
Vayered Adonay al-har Sinay el-rosh hahar vayikra Adonay le-Moshe el-rosh hahar vaya’al Moshe.

19:21
God said to Moses, ‘Go back down and warn the people that they must not cross the boundary in order to see the Divine, because this will cause many to die.
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe red ha’ed ba’am pen-yehersu el-Adonay lir’ot venafal mimenu rav.

19:22
The priests, who [usually] come near the Divine must also sanctify themselves, or else God will send destruction among them.’
Vegam hakohanim hanigashim el-Adonay yitkadashu pen-yifrots bahem Adonay.

19:23
Moses replied to God, ‘The people cannot climb Mount Sinai. You already warned them to set a boundary around the mountain and to declare it sacred.’

19:24
God said to him, ‘Go down. You can then come [back] up along with Aaron. But the priests and the [other] people must not violate the boundary to go up to the Divine; if they do, He will send destruction among them.’
Vayomer elav Adonay lech-red ve’alita atah ve’Aharon imach vehakohanim veha’am al-yehersu la’alot el-Adonay pen-yifrots-bam.

19:25
Moses went down to the people and conveyed this to them.
Vayered Moshe el-ha’am vayomer alehem.

20:1
God spoke all these words, saying:
Vayedaber Elohim et kol-hadevarim ha’eleh lemor.

20:2
I am God your Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, from the place of slavery.
Anochi Adonay Eloheycha asher hotseticha me’erets Mitsrayim mibeyt avadim.

20:3
Do not have any other gods before Me.
Lo yihyeh lecha elohim acherim al-panay.

20:4
Do not represent [such] gods by any carved statue or picture of anything in the heaven above, on the earth below, or in the water below the land.

20:5
Do not bow down to [such gods] or worship them. I am God your Lord, a God who demands exclusive worship. Where My enemies are concerned, I keep in mind the sin of the fathers for [their] descendants, to the third and fourth [generation].
Lo-tishtachaveh lahem velo ta’ovdem ki anochi Adonay Eloheycha El kana poked avon avot al-banim al-shileshim ve’al-ribe’im leson’ay.

20:6
But for those who love Me and keep My commandments, I show love for thousands [of generations].

20:7
Do not take the name of God your Lord in vain. God will not allow the one who takes His name in vain to go unpunished.
Lo tisa et-shem-Adonay Eloheycha lashav ki lo yenakeh Adonay et asher-yisa et-shmo lashav.

20:8
Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy.
Zachor et-yom haShabat lekadsho.

20:9
You can work during the six weekdays and do all your tasks.
Sheshet yamim ta’avod ve’asita chol-melachtecha.

20:10
But Saturday is the Sabbath to God your Lord. Do not do anything that constitutes work. [This includes] you, your son, your daughter, your slave, your maid, your animal, and the foreigner in your gates.
Veyom hashvi’i Shabat l’Adonay Eloheycha lo ta’aseh chol-melachah atah uvincha-uvitecha avdecha va’amatcha uvehemtecha vegercha asher bish’areycha.

20:11
It was during the six weekdays that God made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on Saturday. God therefore blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Ki sheshet-yamim asah Adonay et-hashamayim ve’et-ha’arets et-hayam ve’et-kol-asher-bam vayanach bayom hashvi’i al-ken berach Adonay et-yom haShabat vayekadeshehu.

20:12
Honor your father and mother. You will then live long on the land that God your Lord is giving you.

20:13
Do not commit murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not testify as a false witness against your neighbor.
Lo tirtsach. Lo tin’af. Lo tignov. Lo-ta’aneh vere’acha ed shaker.

20:14
Do not be envious of your neighbor’s house. Do not be envious of your neighbor’s wife, his slave, his maid, his ox, his donkey, or anything else that is your neighbor’s.
Lo tachmod beyt re’echa. Lo tachmod eshet re’echa ve’avdo va’amato veshoro vachamoro vechol asher lere’echa.
