Fourth Aliyah



3:22 
And the LORD G-d said: ‘Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever.’
Vayomer Adonay Elohim hen ha’adam hayah ke’achad mimenu lada’at tov vara ve’ata pen-yishlach yado velakach gam me’Ets haChayim ve’achal vachay le’olam.
וַיֹּאמֶר ׀ יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים הֵן הָֽאָדָם הָיָה כְּאַחַד מִמֶּנּוּ לָדַעַת טוֹב וָרָע וְעַתָּה ׀ פֶּן־ יִשְׁלַח יָדוֹ וְלָקַח גַּם מֵעֵץ הַֽחַיִּים וְאָכַל וָחַי לְעֹלָֽם׃
 

3:23 
Therefore the LORD G-d sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Vayeshalchehu Adonay Elohim miGan-Eden la’avod et-ha’adamah asher lukach misham.
וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵהוּ יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים מִגַּן־ עֵדֶן לַֽעֲבֹד אֶת־ הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר לֻקַּח מִשָּֽׁם׃
 

3:24 
So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way to the tree of life.
Vayegaresh et-ha’Adam vayashken mikedem legan-Eden et-hakruvim ve’et lahat hacherev hamithapechet lishmor et-derech ets hachayim.
וַיְגָרֶשׁ אֶת־ הָֽאָדָם וַיַּשְׁכֵּן מִקֶּדֶם לְגַן־ עֵדֶן אֶת־ הַכְּרֻבִים וְאֵת לַהַט הַחֶרֶב הַמִּתְהַפֶּכֶת לִשְׁמֹר אֶת־ דֶּרֶךְ עֵץ הַֽחַיִּֽים׃
 

4:1 
And the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived and bore Cain, and said: ‘I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.’
Veha’Adam yada et-Chavah ishto vatahar vateled et-Kayin vatomer kaniti ish et-Adonay.
וְהָאָדָם יָדַע אֶת־ חַוָּה אִשְׁתּוֹ וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד אֶת־ קַיִן וַתֹּאמֶר קָנִיתִי אִישׁ אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃
 

4:2 
And again she bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
Vatosef laledet et-achiv et-Havel vayehi-Hevel ro’eh tson veKayin hayah oved adamah.
וַתֹּסֶף לָלֶדֶת אֶת־ אָחִיו אֶת־ הָבֶל וַֽיְהִי־ הֶבֶל רֹעֵה צֹאן וְקַיִן הָיָה עֹבֵד אֲדָמָֽה׃
 

4:3 
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
Vayehi mikets yamim vayave Kayin miperi ha’adamah minchah l’Adonay.
וַֽיְהִי מִקֵּץ יָמִים וַיָּבֵא קַיִן מִפְּרִי הָֽאֲדָמָה מִנְחָה לַֽיהוָֽה׃
 

4:4 
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering;
VeHevel hevi gam-hu mibechorot tsono umechelvehen vayisha Adonay el-Hevel ve’el-minchato.
וְהֶבֶל הֵבִיא גַם־ הוּא מִבְּכֹרוֹת צֹאנוֹ וּמֵֽחֶלְבֵהֶן וַיִּשַׁע יְהוָה אֶל־ הֶבֶל וְאֶל־ מִנְחָתֽוֹ׃
 

4:5 
but unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
Ve’el-Kayin ve’el-minchato lo sha’ah vayichar le-Kayin me’od vayiplu panav.
וְאֶל־ קַיִן וְאֶל־ מִנְחָתוֹ לֹא שָׁעָה וַיִּחַר לְקַיִן מְאֹד וַֽיִּפְּלוּ פָּנָֽיו׃
 

4:6 
And the LORD said unto Cain: ‘Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
Vayomer Adonay el-Kayin lamah charah lach velamah nafelu fanecha.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־ קָיִן לָמָּה חָרָה לָךְ וְלָמָּה נָפְלוּ פָנֶֽיךָ׃
 

4:7 
If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door; and unto thee is its desire, but thou mayest rule over it.’
Halo im-teytiv se’et ve’im lo teytiv lapetach chatat rovets ve’elecha teshukato ve’atah timshol-bo.
הֲלוֹא אִם־ תֵּיטִיב שְׂאֵת וְאִם לֹא תֵיטִיב לַפֶּתַח חַטָּאת רֹבֵץ וְאֵלֶיךָ תְּשׁוּקָתוֹ וְאַתָּה תִּמְשָׁל־ בּֽוֹ׃
 

4:8 
And Cain spoke unto Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
Vayomer Kayin el-Hevel achiv vayehi biheyotam basadeh vayakom Kayin el-Hevel achiv vayahargehu.
וַיֹּאמֶר קַיִן אֶל־ הֶבֶל אָחִיו וַֽיְהִי בִּהְיוֹתָם בַּשָּׂדֶה וַיָּקָם קַיִן אֶל־ הֶבֶל אָחִיו וַיַּהַרְגֵֽהוּ׃
 

4:9 
And the LORD said unto Cain: ‘Where is Abel thy brother?’ And he said: ‘I know not; am I my brother’s keeper?’
Vayomer Adonay el-Kayin ey Hevel achicha vayomer lo yadati hashomer achi anochi.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־ קַיִן אֵי הֶבֶל אָחִיךָ וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא יָדַעְתִּי הֲשֹׁמֵר אָחִי אָנֹֽכִי׃
 

4:10 
And He said: ‘What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto Me from the ground.
Vayomer me asita kol demey achicha tsoakim elay min-ha’adamah.
וַיֹּאמֶר מֶה עָשִׂיתָ קוֹל דְּמֵי אָחִיךָ צֹעֲקִים אֵלַי מִן־ הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃
 

4:11 
And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand.
Ve’atah arur atah min-ha’adamah asher patseta et-piha lakachat et-demey achicha miyadecha.
וְעַתָּה אָרוּר אָתָּה מִן־ הָֽאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר פָּצְתָה אֶת־ פִּיהָ לָקַחַת אֶת־ דְּמֵי אָחִיךָ מִיָּדֶֽךָ׃
 

4:12 
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.’
Ki ta’avod et-ha’adamah lo-tosef tet-kocha lach na vanad tihyeh va’arets.
כִּי תַֽעֲבֹד אֶת־ הָאֲדָמָה לֹֽא־ תֹסֵף תֵּת־ כֹּחָהּ לָךְ נָע וָנָד תִּֽהְיֶה בָאָֽרֶץ׃
 

4:13 
And Cain said unto the LORD: ‘My punishment is greater than I can bear.
Vayomer Kayin el-Adonay gadol avoni mineso.
וַיֹּאמֶר קַיִן אֶל־ יְהוָה גָּדוֹל עֲוֺנִי מִנְּשֹֽׂא׃
 

4:14 
Behold, Thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the land; and from Thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me.’
Hen gerashta oti hayom me’al peney ha’adamah umipanecha esater vehayiti na vanad ba’arets vehayah chol- motse’i yahar’geni.
הֵן גֵּרַשְׁתָּ אֹתִי הַיּוֹם מֵעַל פְּנֵי הָֽאֲדָמָה וּמִפָּנֶיךָ אֶסָּתֵר וְהָיִיתִי נָע וָנָד בָּאָרֶץ וְהָיָה כָל־ מֹצְאִי יַֽהַרְגֵֽנִי׃
 

4:15 
And the LORD said unto him: ‘Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.’ And the LORD set a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.
Vayomer lo Adonay lachen kol-horeg Kayin shiv’atayim yukam vayasem Adonay le-Kayin ot levilti hakot-oto kol-motse’o.
וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ יְהוָה לָכֵן כָּל־ הֹרֵג קַיִן שִׁבְעָתַיִם יֻקָּם וַיָּשֶׂם יְהוָה לְקַיִן אוֹת לְבִלְתִּי הַכּוֹת־ אֹתוֹ כָּל־ מֹצְאֽוֹ׃
 

4:16 
And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
Vayetse Kayin milifney Adonay vayeshev be’erets-Nod kid’mat-Eden.
וַיֵּצֵא קַיִן מִלִּפְנֵי יְהוָה וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּאֶֽרֶץ־ נוֹד קִדְמַת־ עֵֽדֶן׃
 

4:17 
And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore Enoch; and he builded a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch.
Vayeda Kayin et-ishto vatahar vateled et-Chanoch vayehi boneh ir vayikra shem ha’ir keshem beno Chanoch.
וַיֵּדַע קַיִן אֶת־ אִשְׁתּוֹ וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד אֶת־ חֲנוֹךְ וַֽיְהִי בֹּנֶה עִיר וַיִּקְרָא שֵׁם הָעִיר כְּשֵׁם בְּנוֹ חֲנֽוֹךְ׃
 

4:18 
And unto Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael; and Mehujael begot Methushael; and Methushael begot Lamech.
Vayivaled la-Chanoch et-Yirad veYirad yalad et-Mechuya’el uMechiya’el yalad et-Metusha’el uMetusha’el yalad et-Lamech.
וַיִּוָּלֵד לַֽחֲנוֹךְ אֶת־ עִירָד וְעִירָד יָלַד אֶת־ מְחֽוּיָאֵל וּמְחִיּיָאֵל יָלַד אֶת־ מְתוּשָׁאֵל וּמְתוּשָׁאֵל יָלַד אֶת־ לָֽמֶךְ׃
