Chayay Sarah (חַיֵּי שָׂרָה)

Genesis 23:1 – 25:18

First Aliyah



 

23:1
Sarah had lived to be 127 years old. [These were] the years of Sarah’s life.
Vayihyu chayey Sarah me’ah shanah ve’esrim shanah vesheva shanim shney chayey Sarah.
וַיִּהְיוּ חַיֵּי שָׂרָה, מֵאָה שָׁנָה וְעֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וְשֶׁבַע שָׁנִים–שְׁנֵי, חַיֵּי שָׂרָה.
 

23:2
Sarah died in Kiryath Arba, also known as Hebron, in the land of Canaan. Abraham came to eulogize Sarah and to weep for her.
Vatamot Sarah beKiryat Arebah hi Chevron be’erets Kena’an vayavo Avraham lispod le-Sarah velivekotah.
וַתָּמָת שָׂרָה, בְּקִרְיַת אַרְבַּע הִוא חֶבְרוֹן–בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן; וַיָּבֹא, אַבְרָהָם, לִסְפֹּד לְשָׂרָה, וְלִבְכֹּתָהּ.
 

23:3
Abraham rose from beside his dead, and he spoke to the children of Heth.
Vayakom Avraham me’al peney meto vayedaber el-bney-Chet lemor.
וַיָּקָם, אַבְרָהָם, מֵעַל, פְּנֵי מֵתוֹ; וַיְדַבֵּר אֶל-בְּנֵי-חֵת, לֵאמֹר.
 

23:4
“I am an immigrant and a resident among you,” he said. “Sell me property for a burial place with you so that I can bury my dead, [and not have her here] right in front of me.”
Ger-vetoshav anochi imachem tenu li achuzat-kever imachem ve’ekberah meti milefanay.
גֵּר-וְתוֹשָׁב אָנֹכִי, עִמָּכֶם; תְּנוּ לִי אֲחֻזַּת-קֶבֶר עִמָּכֶם, וְאֶקְבְּרָה מֵתִי מִלְּפָנָי.
 

23:5
The children of Heth replied to Abraham, saying to him,
Vaya’anu veney-Chet et-Avraham lemor lo.
וַיַּעֲנוּ בְנֵי-חֵת אֶת-אַבְרָהָם, לֵאמֹר לוֹ.
 

23:6
“Listen to us, Sir. You are a prince of God in our midst. Take our best burial site to bury your dead. No one among us will deny you his burial site to bury your dead.”
Shma’enu adoni nesi Elohim atah betochenu bemivechar kevareynu kevor et-metecha ish mimenu et-kivero lo-yichleh mimecha mikevor metcha.
שְׁמָעֵנוּ אֲדֹנִי, נְשִׂיא אֱלֹהִים אַתָּה בְּתוֹכֵנוּ–בְּמִבְחַר קְבָרֵינוּ, קְבֹר אֶת-מֵתֶךָ; אִישׁ מִמֶּנּוּ, אֶת-קִבְרוֹ לֹא-יִכְלֶה מִמְּךָ מִקְּבֹר מֵתֶךָ.
 

23:7
Abraham rose, and he bowed down to the local people, the children of Heth
Vayakom Avraham vayishtachu le’am-ha’arets livney-Chet.
וַיָּקָם אַבְרָהָם וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ לְעַם-הָאָרֶץ, לִבְנֵי-חֵת.
 

23:8
He spoke to them and said, “If you really want to help me bury my dead and [put her out of] my presence, listen to me, and speak up for me to Ephron son of Tzohar.
Vayedaber itam lemor im-yesh et-nafshechem likbor et-meti milfanay shma’uni ufig’u-li be’Efron ben-Tsohar.
וַיְדַבֵּר אִתָּם, לֵאמֹר: אִם-יֵשׁ אֶת-נַפְשְׁכֶם, לִקְבֹּר אֶת-מֵתִי מִלְּפָנַי–שְׁמָעוּנִי, וּפִגְעוּ-לִי בְּעֶפְרוֹן בֶּן-צֹחַר.
 

23:9
Let him sell me the Makhpelah Cave, which belongs to him, at the edge of his field. Let him sell it to me in your presence for its full price, as a burial property.”
Veyiten-li et-me’arat haMachpelah asher-lo asher biktseh sadehu bechesef male yitnenah li betochechem la’achuzat kaver.
וְיִתֶּן-לִי, אֶת-מְעָרַת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה אֲשֶׁר-לוֹ, אֲשֶׁר, בִּקְצֵה שָׂדֵהוּ: בְּכֶסֶף מָלֵא יִתְּנֶנָּה לִּי, בְּתוֹכְכֶם–לַאֲחֻזַּת-קָבֶר.
 

23:10
Ephron was then sitting among the children of Heth. Ephron the Hittite replied to Abraham in the presence of the children of Heth, so that all who came to the city gate could hear.
Ve’Efron yoshev betoch beney-Chet vaya’an Efron haChiti et-Avraham be’ozney veney-Chet lechol ba’ey sha’ar-iro lemor.
וְעֶפְרוֹן יֹשֵׁב, בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי-חֵת; וַיַּעַן עֶפְרוֹן הַחִתִּי אֶת-אַבְרָהָם בְּאָזְנֵי בְנֵי-חֵת, לְכֹל בָּאֵי שַׁעַר-עִירוֹ לֵאמֹר.
 

23:11
‘No, my lord,’ he said. ‘Listen to me. I have already given you the field. I have [also] given you the cave that is there. Here, in the presence of my countrymen, I have given it to you. Bury your dead.’
Lo-adoni shma’eni hasadeh natati lach vehame’arah asher-bo lecha netatiha le’eyney veney ami netatiha lach kvor metecha.
לֹא-אֲדֹנִי שְׁמָעֵנִי–הַשָּׂדֶה נָתַתִּי לָךְ, וְהַמְּעָרָה אֲשֶׁר-בּוֹ לְךָ נְתַתִּיהָ; לְעֵינֵי בְנֵי-עַמִּי נְתַתִּיהָ לָּךְ, קְבֹר מֵתֶךָ.
 

23:12
Abraham bowed down before the local people.
Vayishtachu Avraham lifney am-ha’arets.
וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ, אַבְרָהָם, לִפְנֵי, עַם הָאָרֶץ.
 

23:13
He spoke to Ephron so that all the local people could hear. ‘If you will only listen to me,’ he said. ‘I am giving you the money for the field. Take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.’
Vayedaber el-Efron be’ozney am-ha’arets lemor ach im-atah lu shma’eni natati kesef hasadeh kach mimeni ve’ekberah et-meti shamah.
וַיְדַבֵּר אֶל-עֶפְרוֹן בְּאָזְנֵי עַם-הָאָרֶץ, לֵאמֹר, אַךְ אִם-אַתָּה לוּ, שְׁמָעֵנִי: נָתַתִּי כֶּסֶף הַשָּׂדֶה, קַח מִמֶּנִּי, וְאֶקְבְּרָה אֶת-מֵתִי, שָׁמָּה.
 

23:14
Ephron replied to Abraham, saying to him,
Vaya’an Efron et-Avraham lemor lo.
וַיַּעַן עֶפְרוֹן אֶת-אַבְרָהָם, לֵאמֹר לוֹ.
 

23:15
‘My lord, listen to me. What’s 400 silver shekels worth of land between you and me? Bury your dead.
Adoni shma’eni erets arba me’ot shekel-kesef beyni uveyneycha mah-hi ve’et-metecha kevor.
אֲדֹנִי שְׁמָעֵנִי, אֶרֶץ אַרְבַּע מֵאֹת שֶׁקֶל-כֶּסֶף בֵּינִי וּבֵינְךָ מַה-הִוא; וְאֶת-מֵתְךָ, קְבֹר.
 

23:16
Abraham understood what Ephron meant. He weighed out for Ephron the silver that had been mentioned in the presence of the children of Heth, 400 shekels in negotiable currency.
Vayishma Avraham el-Efron vayishkol Avraham le-Efron et-hakesef asher diber be’ozney veney-Chet arba me’ot shekel kesef over lasocher.
וַיִּשְׁמַע אַבְרָהָם, אֶל-עֶפְרוֹן, וַיִּשְׁקֹל אַבְרָהָם לְעֶפְרֹן, אֶת-הַכֶּסֶף אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר בְּאָזְנֵי בְנֵי-חֵת–אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת שֶׁקֶל כֶּסֶף, עֹבֵר לַסֹּחֵר.
