VaEra (וָאֵרָא)

Exodus 6:2 – 9:35

Sixth Aliyah

8:19
I will therefore make a distinction between My people and your people. This miraculous sign will take place tomorrow.’ ‘
Vesamti fedut beyn ami uveyn amecha lemachar yihyeh ha’ot hazeh.

8:20
God did this, and huge throngs of creatures attacked the palaces of Pharaoh and his officials. Throughout all Egypt, the land was devastated by the creatures.
Vaya’as Adonay ken vayavo arov kaved beytah Far’oh uveyt avadav uvechol-erets Mitsrayim tishachet ha’arets mipeney he’arov.

8:21
Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron. ‘Go!’ he said. ‘[You have permission to] sacrifice to your God here in [our] land.’
Vayikra Far’oh el-Moshe ule-Aharon vayomer lechu zivechu le-Eloheychem ba’arets.

8:22
‘That would hardly be suitable,’ replied Moses. ‘What we will sacrifice to God our Lord is sacred to the Egyptians. Could we sacrifice the sacred animal of the Egyptians before their very eyes and not have them stone us?
Vayomer Moshe lo nachon la’asot ken ki to’avat Mitsrayim nizbach l’Adonay Eloheynu hen nizbach et-to’avat Mitsrayim le’eyneyhem velo yiskelunu.

8:23
What we must do is make a three day journey into the desert. There we will be able to sacrifice to God our Lord, just as He told us.’

8:25
Moses answered, ‘When I leave your presence, I will pray to God. Tomorrow, the creatures will go away from Pharaoh, his servants, and his people. But let Pharaoh never again deceive us, refusing to let the people sacrifice to God.’
Vayomer Moshe hineh anochi yotse me’imach vehatarti el-Adonay vesar he’arov miPar’oh me’avadav ume’amo machar rak al-yosef Par’oh hatel levilti shalachet-ha’am lizboach l’Adonay.

8:26
Moses left Pharaoh’s presence and prayed to God.
Vayetse Moshe me’im Par’oh vayetar el-Adonay.

8:27
Doing as Moses requested, God caused the creatures to leave Pharaoh, his servants and his people. Not a single one remained.
Vaya’as Adonay kidvar Moshe vayasar he’arov miPar’oh me’avadav ume’amo lo nish’ar echad.

8:28
But this time again, Pharaoh made himself obstinate, and he would not let the people leave.

9:2
For if you refuse to let them leave, and continue holding them,

9:3
God’s power will be directed against your livestock in the field. The horses, donkeys, camels, cattle and sheep [will die from] a very serious epidemic.

9:6
On the next day, God did this, and all the livestock in Egypt died. Of the Israelites’ livestock, however, not a single one was affected.
